High velocity factory 308 cartridge

My dad has been lamenting the fact that he saw a 308W box of factory ammo that was labeled as high velocity/high speed but didnt buy it. He had never seen it before and hasn't seen it since.

If I understand him, he's saying it was made by Federal but I don't see anything about it on their website or any other company's. He also says for sure it wasn't Hornady Superformance.

Any guesses on what he saw?

I wouldn't worry about sales gimmicks! Because there is really no such thing in 308 win. They just don't have a big enough case compared to a 300 win mag and larger.

I do load 125 gr. TNT varmint rounds that are pretty fast out of my 24 inch barrel.

Hornady had the 110gr Tap ammo too, but its discontinued.

The federal mk319 mod0 130gr sost rounds are decent speed and the bullet is a hybrid lead nose, copper solid base, bit alas those rounds are almost non-existent too.

If one of these where what he saw, they won't do what he wants. He wants to shoot his rifle to 1k, and given the 20MOA rail and scope he has, the ballistics tables indicate his scope will bottom out at about 975. Of course he can use his reticle to get the extra MOA or so, but I think it's bugging him a little and a faster bullet will let him say his rifle can get to 1k.

He shoots Federal 175 SMK and it groups really well with his rifle. I'm going to buy him a box of Hornady Superformance Match 168 grain for him to try if and when I can find one.

1k with a .308 is doable, but there are so many better options. You're looking at somewhere near 1 ft of drift for every mph of wind at 1,000. It's like throwing an inflated ballon across your living room at the far wall.

Agreed, when he got interested in long range shooting, I tried to change his mind. He bought a rifle he liked the look of and I thought would shoot well in a caliber he knew the Army used (he's retired from the Army) cause if the Army has used it for decades, it must be a pretty good option, right?

At one point after he gained some proficiency, we went shooting together and he was quite surprised when we started comparing the drop of my 260 Rem with 26" barrel shooting Hornady Superformance and his 24" 308 shooting 175, hahaha.

He may have seen an old box of 308 Accelerator ammo, which was a 22 bullet with sabot in a 308 case. Very fast but not accurate.
He should use Bergers 185 Juggernaut OTM ammo to go 1000 in loaded ammo.

He shoots Federal 175 SMK and it groups really well with his rifle. I'm going to buy him a box of Hornady Superformance Match 168 grain for him to try if and when I can find one.

I shoot out to 1230 yards dials on my fixed 10X SWFA. But even with my Leupold LR Tactical I had enough dials to shoot out to 1k with my PSS and 168 SMK. my elevation is 2200 ft. What is the elevation at your area? And what scope is your Dad using?

He shoots at 600, 700' above sea level. His scope is a Vortex Golden Eagle HD. His rifle is the orignal Savage 10 BA LE, but he took off the massive rail that came with it cause it was 0 MOA. The two make a bit of an odd combo, but it's a joy to shoot being so heavy and having a brake.

I think ultimately he just got a little unlucky and all the manufacturing tolerances of the rifle, rail, and mounts when stacked together didn't work to his favor. From the very first time we zeroed it I remember thinking it was low in the scopes adjustment range.

Bergers 185 Juggernaut would be the way to go for 1k with .308.
175 SMK would be second choice.

Nosler sells factory 308 with there 125 BT. 3100 fps. Very accurate. But not intended for 1000 yds.

Ah I see. Well he has some nice glass but not much elevation adjustment. I'd measure his zero and see where it sits in the range of adjustment. He could get a 30 moa base but it depends on his scope. Another option it to get a scope with more adjustment. Or he could get a barrel in 260 Rem like you. Dimensions on actions isn't always great. I have that issue on my remington. But it shoots awesome and to me that's what really matters. You could try a Berger VLD or one of the new polymer tipped bullets. Those should fly flatter.

Burris makes a 25 moa base for Savage models too.
