high value low cost optics, scopes binoculars, spotters ect.

I kinda feel bad for posting some of what I do on here as I'm pretty green at long range shooting.
I don't compete in matches yet and most of the places I've hunted being able to hit consistantly offhand was very important. I never had a reason to shoot past 500 yards. And that I did with my 375 with a fixed 3x Leupold. But I did that because I knew I could with that rifle and load and scope.
So now that I have a rifle that can shoot long range "on purpose " I need to get it set up for that. . So I'm studying and learning all that I can. Several more 1/2" groups today with my 6.5 Creedmoor easier to shoot at 15 below than 30-40 below. Fur and meat are my reasons for long range shooting so all the math involved is some of this mil dot ect shooting is wasted on me.

You're like me, just learning and your a hunter with a purpose. Don't be shy, some on here bust chops a little, but all hunters speak the same language. 1-2 shot kills are best, that's what I practice for.

IMO. What hunters like me need is an idiot proof reticule with hold over bars to 1,000 yards or meters and windage marks each 10 MPH for up to 50 MPH or maybe 70 kmph. Maybe just windage marks that wide for 100-600 then taper down to 20 or 30 from there to 1,000 .

Instead all the better Scopes utilize complex math skills just to make the reticule do its job. And there isn't time for all that knob turning after the first shot. At least not with most predators.
One of the few things worse than being a bad shot is seeing a thousand dollars worth of wolves run off because my ranging and sighting system wasn't up to the task. Edjucating a wolf pack is a terrible thing to do. . !! If NightForce came out with the reticule I described I'd pay 2,000$ for that scope.
Put it in a f.f.p. 3.5-15x50 lighted reticule. I would pay for that.

That's good to know about the Vortex. On problem I have is the leade needed for a running shot on a yote or wolf. Some of the lower end Scopes like the Burris E1 because reticule and the Bushnell DOA have hold off dots or bars with hash marks. I thin.k the DOA reticule would be the better of the 2 .
A 300 yard shot at 40 MPH is something I haven't been able to master yet.
Had to go to town and just got back. This sure isnt foolproof but its how I look at running shots. Instead of doing silly math in your head(I cant either) I just know that at 300 my TOF is .3 seconds. As I'm watching and swinging scope with critter I try to see how far he goes in .3 sconds. I can hit .3 seconds in my head pretty easy. Correct forward .3 seconds worth of running and let fly. Hope ya got an AR lol. I almost never shoot running cep yotes or wounded stuff and I'm half *** ok at it. Rather never have to do it which is part of the reason I took up LRH but when I do I do it by counting time not trying to remember some complex lead crap I will forget.

I dont know I shoot a lot but it works for me.

Horus Blackbird 2 has a moving target reticle. I bought a Trijicon 3x9x40 recently with the amber post reticle, I'm hoping this to be the ticket on coyotes but the magnification is a limitation, we'll see. I really liked their wide open reticle and light gathering concept, we'll have to see. I'll update this post when I get a chance to work with it. I'm putting on an 18" 308 BAR or mu 20" Fn BAR Conceptually that post concept with their low light brightness intrigued me, although 3-18 would be my preference + a little more in the reticle but not as much as busy as Horus reticles. That would be the ticket, to be able to shoot a coyote or say a wolf before and after they move out to about 700 yards.

Thanks for the heads up on the Horus Scopes and reticule. The 59 looks like it would be just right.
may take some time and practice and I don't know if the bars extend far enough. But it looks head and shoulders better than anything else I've seen.

I bet you ould get pretty salty with the horus on movers. {robly the best deal going. To really simplify look at the new burris eliminator with horus AND auto rangecompensation. That would be the real ticket if the bugs work out of it. 10 yrs from now the scope will autolite the rite spot for a kill with leads and wind corrected. Its coming. Scares me I'm obsolete again.

I received a pair of Nikon Monarch 5 ATB 8x42 binoculars for Christmas and was just wondering if anyone else has a pair and how do they perform for whitetail deer hunting? I noticed they say made in China and most scopes built there are considered junk. Thanks! :)

Went and perused the Horus line. Im' still convinced Vortex has the best bang for the buck because...

The Horus Scope line has a ONE YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY, limited as in their discretion if they will replace a defective product. That don't fly with me especially when all the other players in the 700 dollar plus arena are offering LIFETIME NON LIMITED WARRANTY and it's transferrable to a new owner as well.

That don't say much for their confidence in their products.

With me, at least, warranty speaks volumes of a company and their commitment to the customer.

China is like many countries selling stuff in the USA. Some products are really good...some are junk. I doubt that any product carrying the Nikon label is junk..??
Use them in good health and much happiness and down worry about what someone else says about them!

I spoke with a former dealer that's connected with them. He said Horus controls the contract with the military and anything sold to the military goes through their contract, they can't give a lifetime warranty to the military as they will break stuff eventually. I gathered, by law they have to give the same guarantee to the military if they give it to us. Bad for business really, but I've heard they don't have dealers anymore as the don't need an absolute retail market until contract change's my guess. I've also heard they do stand behind their product? The military tends to buy their reticles on Nightforve, US Optics and Schmitt and benders, Horus and a few others. You have to pay for the reticle on one if you buy, say a Nightforce but that may be the way to go. For the money, learning their system and using their software seems like a good first step. Bushnell has a nice offering with them in the HDMR. I am passing on hearsay though, I'm not an insider okay.

I agree with Sully 110%. If it works and you are happy with it. Who cares.

I wonder where Luepold is made? They are very secretive about that.

Used to be when I saw 'Made in China', I thought of Harbor Freight. Not any more. I just think of trade imbalance.:D

I didnt mean a horus scope just the reticle style. Any pyramid style would be a good bet for movers even the leupold varmint with the 10/20 wind deals. Just something to give you a reference point. The new XLR from vortex is what I would look at in a horus style system. Horus sure has strangled innovation out of the market with the lock they seem to have on similar designs....too bad when a company has a great innovation and then hurts everyone by sitting on it. If they had done what Vortex did Im sure we would all be shooting horus stuff but instead they tried to sell $300 scopes for $2300.

Leupolds are made in a state of the art facility on planet pandora where they utilize the latest marketing...I meant optics technology such as unobtanium and icbeter and lookfaronium to create unparralleled optical illusions such as an $8000 price tag on a mark 8.
Ohh and all the other stuff is made in china by the same guys who build leapers scopes and are paid $893 yen an hour ($.19 cents a day). Luckily leup-old bought them all plastic gloves for in the bathroom....seems to have cut down on the muddy glass comments by some.
