Yep getting the rifle to move straight back is what you are trying to do. This is where the NPA and the firmness of the rear bag can come into play. When I'm loaded forward I am also pulling the stock back into my shoulder with a few pounds of pressure. I also want my fingers cupped and not wrapped around the stock, so that the applied pressure is straight back (I like vertical grip stocks for this reason). The trigger finger is going to want to do what the other fingers are doing, a sympathetic movement so to speak.
bigngreen's usage of free recoil is common practice with a lot of shooters. I can get away with it on lighter recoiling rifles, not so much with the bigger boomers. For me it seems to magnify any imperfections in my position and makes spotting my impacts harder, the heavier the recoil the more it magnifies.
