After reading through all the BS stuff I finally found your reply about the transition to the 300 WSM. I have loaded some Hammer bullets up for the 30-06 custom that I recently built, the 35 Whelen and a .450 Bushmaster that Is my son's new hunting rifle. I have the loaded Hammers, however last season was a bust due to warm weather and bright full-moons!!! I'm not sure about if the Hammers will give better terminal performance, however I'm willing to give them a try. I can say from experience that the Hammers are a different breed and to make certain that you start low with your load data and work up from there. I had some pressure issues with the custom, match barrel on my son's AR .450 Bushmaster, and had some issues with COAL in both the Whelen and the 30-06. These were simply load development due to a different ogive where the bullets had to be seated deeper than other bullets I've used in these cartridges. The attached target would have been one hole had it not been for a scope adjustment.

For sure I believe that. I'd think, out of a 308 or A 300 wsm despite their speed difference, a 150 grain mono would be about the sweet spot.
I have a .300 win load with a 120 Barnes blackout bullet doing 4000 fps. No doubt it would make a black bear very dead but I doubt it would exit (didn't exit a big bodied sask whitetail buck at around 400 yards) and I like exit wounds - I do not subscribe to any "energy dump" nonsense like what berger peddled for a while nor do I beleive 100 percent weight retention is in any way correlated to fast killing power (while I like Barnes for some things and loooooove the federal trophy bonded tip both companies have advertised that if a bullet doesn't hold together it can't kill like theirs - BS!!!!!) - at the end of the day there's no magic anywhere, need penetration with sufficient disruption to affect broad wounding for fast humane kills. There's probably dozens of bullet designs that can reasonably be counted on to do this. Exit wounds are a good thing too…more blood loss, and more importantly living where I do almost all my hunting has been when there's snow on the ground. Any honest hunter knows that sometimes you have to track a little, even if you do everything right. Tracking an animal with a big free bleeding Exit wound in snow is easy.

308 is a good choice, I have not tried the hammer's, I would talk to the guys that makes hammer's. After reading this post and others I don't think there has ever been a bullet made that has not failed, pick one that groups well has worked for you or friend's. What bullet are you shooting now? I have used 165's Hornady interbond for years(no longer in production) interlock or Nosler partition or Sierra are all good choice at the distance you will be hunting, good luck.

Dear Bang4theBuck, to clarify some of the confusion on this thread, are you asking exclusively for advice on Hammer bullets? Do you require a copper bullet for this hunt? You stated you are looking for heavies, "wanting really good bullet performance". Should those of us responding to your request assume you are looking to standardize a load for multiple applications out of .308 1 in 10 twist barrel for hunting applications, including long range hunting? Please advise, thank you.
He's not using a .308 anymore due to a PE issue. Now using a 300WSM. Post#128

Calvin45 your 2200 impact with mushroom monos isn't to far off , shedding are not all the same either & only a few brands stand out consistently in pushing the windows further than I once gave credit of being able to do
For those who want to listen & learn keep delving & look @ weaknesses not strengths relay this to the company & their ability to take head on or deflect / dismiss
imo it will tell you a lot about what they are there for

Me personally I'd rather let them know as I've previously done with every other brand I've used & some companies have improved by acknowledging bad results some sugar coat it yep a individual thing
Now I don't know everything & Steve pulled his 30 cal 152hh from production as it was showing a bad weakness which I have learnt from ( I had no part in what Steve found out with that pill )

That said out of a .308 id aim for a mid weight with a mono. I do like exit wounds…but the only thing a really heavy mono will do out of a 308 is kill slower

)You're not replying to Steve who is @RockyMtnMT . You're replying to the former 300prc now @RockyMtnUT. I don't know what on earth he's trying to prove by changing his name and the way it's written to so closely imitate Steve's signature while making his picture a "failed" hammer bullet that could easily be created by just shooting one into gel at insufficient (and unrealistic) velocity, but it seems pretty overtly hostile of him and a touch childish to be honest. Steve's approach to this gent may not have been the most subtle (he never is
) but good grief the way this guy responded kind of proves Steve right about him. So again, Steve didn't tell you to see post 47, someone who has a problem with Steve did. For all the talk I've heard about hammer supporters jacking threads, this thread that was explicitly seeking input about a hammer bullet sure got picked at by people with other plans for it.

Oh, I forgot - because you're interested in a (bear) Hammer; Steve's got .458" bullets in everything from 250gr-447gr. I used the 402SH with good effect on a bull moose. I'd use the 300gr on bears over bait.
