Gun Issues Post-Gunsmith Visit

Got a question for the experts here. Took my Tikka T3 to the gunsmith to get the barrel threaded for a suppressor. Had an end cap strike on my suppressor afterwards, turns out they didn't put my Reardon muzzle adapter on correctly. They took it back and put in a cherry bomb from Q. Shot it again after i got the suppressor back from the manufacturer and the same thing happened. Took it back to the gunsmith and they said it wasn't concentric again but they thought it was my suppressor. After speaking with a machinist friend of mine I decided they weren't the right guys for the job. They put the reardon back on for me and I decided I'd have to make other plans.

When I shot the gun again it can't group like it used to and the scope is off significantly. I can't zero it at 100 yds, it shoots an inch to the right even though I've taken up all the adjustment. The ammo I used to shoot, Federal powershoks, used to group less than an inch. Now it is over 2 inches. I cleaned it pretty hard core with bore tech copper remover and carbon fouling remover. I did it until patches came out clean. No improvement.

So my question to you experts. What would you do to troubleshoot this??? Scope being off has me confused, did they bump it or did they bend the barrel?? What else could it be?

If they had barrel out of the stock make sure they have the recoil lug seated properly I had that happen to me and I as frustrating because shot good one day and couldn't hit squat the next day. It's real easy to get it out of the slot. David

Sounds like your scope has an issue. I would also check the bottom metal and guard screws to make sure rifle is assembled correct.

+1 to make sure your recoil lug setup is all right.
Had one brought in for issues a few years ago that was missing a whole piece

Aside from the assembly tips mentioned, take a close look at the crown. If you have access to a bore scope take a look at the bore.

I've seen my fair share of botched jobs by others come across my bench.
Firstly, remove the stock, then remove the scope, rings and bases/rail.
Look for shiny marks EVERYWHERE. Under the base/rail, scope where the rings attach, under the rings attachment point, if you see any shiny marks, then something was loose and moving.
Secondly, if the barrel came off, check if the alignment of the barrel stamp/engraving aligns with the stock.
Check that the recoil blade is fitted, if there, and correctly placed in the recess.
Thirdly, when spinning on or off the thread protector or suppressor see if it is not spinning eccentrically.
It is possible that it is threaded off centre or out of time.

Check the stock for cracks.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Inspecting the stock for cracks right now. One smoking gun has popped up, they didn't have the receiver on the recoil lug.

I'll email vortex about the scope also.

I doubt the scope itself is part of the problem. Maybe something in the off and back on.

Is this the first time you've used this gunsmith? I am fortunate to have access to a reputable GS within an hour's drive. I have been working with my go-to GS since 2003.

I use an old fashioned Q-tip on the crown. Slide it in and out all around the bore to see if any fibers are pulled off by burrs or anything.

If it's that far off I'd shoot it without anything screwed to the barrel.

I'm in the camp that I doubt it's a scope issue. But as MM suggested, I'd check everything.

That is likely the problem. You could put it together correctly and try it, or have Vortex check out the scope first.

Not all GS are good. I am fortunate to have one of the best 35 min from my house and he is a sponsor on this site and builds some of the finest guns on the market. Sorry you had the issues you had, but now you learned where not to take your gun. It might save you time and hassle in the future, even if you have to ship your gun, to ask around and research who you should trust to do your gun work.
