Getting a new pickup, help me decide

The 4 cylinder eco cars are a joke. Back in the 90's they did ok. Not so much anymore. My 500 hp Challenger makes 25 mpg. Compare that to a 150 hp Eco jap car making 30ish.

I moved to Wyoming about the same time that the Toyota Prius first hit the market. I had a friend back in Mn that I bought a car from, so I rented a car to get me back there to pick up my 'new' car.

When I got to the rental place, the guy tried (and succeeded) in upselling me to the Prius because at that time Toyota was claiming 70 mpg.

"It'll pay for the extra cost of the rental" he said.

**** thing was lucky to get 30 mpg.

I got back to Mn, picked up my $100 Ford Escort, and drove back.

And got 40 mpg.

As for pickups, my 93 GMC K2500 with a 6.5 diesel regularly gets 18+ mpg. I know a lot of older Cummins do better than that. Pretty decent for heavy duty pickups, IMO.

Good luck in your search!

I've been resisting posting here, as this is exactly like a Rememington
Savage Ruger Winchester thing. Our preferences are often rooted in emotions, and definitely every one's experiences are different. Some folks have had nothing but hardship and heartache with brand x, while their neighbor has had exactly the opposite . Personally, I own Ford. I bought a 2001 F250 Super Duty, V10 gas new. Been a great truck. 220000 miles , still has the original plugs in it. I effing hate Chevrolet. And Toyota ? Crap, don't get me started. Welded too many Dodges back together to ever buy one. No experience with Nissan, prolly won't eith

Ps
I see more Dodges broke down beside the road than any thing else !

Gregg, I like those new Fords, too. Especially the heated tailgate. Comes in handy around here when you have to push it down the road in the winter!:p

Actually, you are 100% correct on your assessment- it's a Rem, Sav, etc, etc, thing. Get what you've had the best luck with.

My problem is, I've always been a Chevy guy but if I were to buy a new one (AINT gonna happen) it'd be a Ford...

Happy New Year, Everyone!!!!

10 - 4 Gregg: Listening to everyone, good - bad comments does make things very confusing. That's why I say invest in a consumers report book on car & truck buying. It will tell you the percent of problems and what the problems are per each 100 vehicles made. They get their Imfo. from repair garages. I have watched what they said closely, if they say that type X is noted for a rusting problem, you can take it to the bank! It will save you money in the long run! Happy new year everyone.

Interesting, a friend of mine got stuck deer hunting this year in his new F150. A guy hooks up with a strap to his rear hitch to pull him out. The strap slipped off the pickup pulling him out. The hook recoiled back and went straight through the Ford's tailgate, like a bullet. Thats an aluminum tailgate. Ive seen them go through windows but.....

Could have been much worse, had it hit somebody. Everybody doesn't like something, but nobody doesn't like Sara Lee! Couldn't resist the thought! Have a happy new year!

Uff da, one time i saw a rope come apart on on a 4wd tractor pulling out a big sprayer. Broke 2 windows in the sprayer and the guy inside was probably a foot away from being killed or maimed. So yes, they were lucky. But after i heard about the f150, i decided maybe its not a good idea to make a truck box out aluminum.

We all have different priorities I guess. Many choices for all of us. When I first saw that Chevrolet commercial where they drop bricks into the beds of chev and ford, i didnt know if I believed it or not. I believe it now;)

Aluminum is a great alloy and usefull for many things, but not refined enough yet for hard use. And I guess i wouldnt feel safe with a "fiberglass" pickup yet as you said you would like. I think the resale value of a truck with holes in its bed wouldnt be so good...And yes, I use my truck bed...you like aluminum Fords, I dont, so I'm done with this thread. The op got alot to think about!

Aluminum is good in racing, making a vehicle lighter. And I don't buy a car or a truck for looks , I buy it to use it. Can't use it if its in a garage. Can't use it if its going to break down. I only buy vehicles that have the BEST! track record for reliability. Aluminum wouldn't come near that classification. When I use a truck I use a truck, no!, I don't abuse them. When I load firewood into my pickup out in the woods, I will throw a lot of it into the bed. An aluminum bed would look like the surface of the moon after a few loads, full of craters! " TOYOTA " PROVEN TRACK RECORD::::: PERIOD! NUF SAID Happy new year.
