General Purpose Cartridge for Coyotes up to Elk

The straight pull with the hogs back stock is likely a Blaser, though there are other high end makers like Merkle, Steyr, Heym and the like that produce them as well. Blaser however is the most common one you see out hunting.
Where are Heym made? It was definitely a Scandinavian made rifle and not a Blaser, I know them quite well.

Cheers.

Curious to hear the experiences of those who've actually shot elk with 6.5s of any ilk, rather than the opinions of those who've never done it.

Loaded with a sound projectile, like a Barnes or HH, I would have absolutely no qualms about taking a .260, Creed, PRC, SAUM, SSS, 6.5/284, etc. on any elk hunt anywhere elk live.

In the same token would be glad to hear from those who actually hunted elk with 7mm's or 30 cal. Most likely 180gr/ 215gr Hybrids :)

Over at RS there's a thread on taking deer, elk, moose, and bears with a .223 using 77gr TMK. I posted their results and I find it interesting being a student of terminal ballistics. But I'll still reach for a 7mm or 30 cal when going after elk. YMMV.

There's a good thread on RS using 6.5 on deer, elk, moose, bears too. Wrench and Form as well as others have great pics on the terminal effects. Again I'll still reach for 7mm or 30 cal. Bullets that are heavy for caliber.

.300RUM. It will kill anything you point it at. With authority.

Yup I agree. And what I would use might not be what others would use. I have two buddies in Bend that both have hunted the area for decades using a 7mm RM. That's their elk rifle and they've taken numerous elk with it. Another buddy that has passed used his 308 win for eastern Oregon elk up in Sumpter. He had many magnums to choose from but took his 308 win for elk out to 300 yards. I would of stuck with my 7mm RM or even my 30-06. But a recent shoulder injury had me purchase a Howa Superlite in 7-08.

As serious question, without my usual attempted humor……wouldn't the felt recoil of the 7-08 in a super lite, be similar or perhaps even greater than that of the other two. Or, was it for ease of carry! Just curious. memtb

We'll find out soon. It's not so much the recoil that bothers me. It's my support side shoulder so it's the weight that's the issue.

Not sure I follow the question. Scandinavia is not a country, it is a region, that includes Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and sometimes also Finland and Iceland.. Heym is German, Steyr is Austrian. I don't know of a straight pull rifle that is made in any of the Scandinavian countries.

Yep! Heck, Jeff (BROZ) and his family can account for a few hundred elk with 210/215/230 Bergers with .300 WM when he was managing ranches. He was guiding huntets to help control elk population. I am pretty sure you remember that thread here and LRO. Most which are LRH, including his wife"s successful harvest. My longest to date is with a MT bull elk at 931Y with my .300 WM loaded with 190 Berger VLD.
