Flattest shooting to 500 yds.

280 Ackley, 150 grain Accubond LR, 3,100 fps....-28" at 500 yards....still going 2,319 fps with 1,791 ft. lbs. of energy...250 yard zero.

300 yard zero works too, puts it -24" at 500 yards.

:)Daisy Red Rider with a 177 round ball. It is so fast that all game at 100 yds will run off. The ball sears the hole shut. It is even worse at 3000yds. I cant figure what load to work. 1 cock or 2 cocks? Can any one help?

I know alot of guys probably think this is a stupid question and I'm some Noob. I get it. I built what I thought was the rifle I needed for how I hunt, its a Custom 300Wby on a 700 action, throated for 208 Amax's which it pushes @3050 from a 28.5" barrel. Its a helluva gun, but it doesn't really fit how I hunt, now I understand that. I want a rifle under 10lb that points fast and hits hard and shoots as flat as possible within the realm where 90% of my shooting takes place, which is 250-500yds. I want to be able to use mil's and hold over within that range. I have good optics now and understand how to dial up and shoot at medium distances, beyond about 800 I play hell but thats my flaw, not my equipment's. I'm just trying to evolve and realize what is going to be most practical for me.
As for bullets I agree that the SMK isn't the best choice, I kind of wondered about the 130 Berger Match Classic Hunter.

Read the entire thread. Never heard elevation mentioned. Daniel what elevation for your hunting area?

John Lazzeroni made a flat shooting platform a few years ago. He used a Warbird, his long magnum 308 cartridge. IIRC he was shooting a 130 gr lazerhead coated TSX bullet. He was getting 4000 fps or so. The advertising at the time said it was the best rifle for shots out to 500 yds without any holdover etc.

I would think you could something similar with your 300 Weatherby. Nosler's load data site says you can get up to 3682 with a 125 nosler accubond and RL-22. You should be able to surpass it with your longer barrel. Crunching some numbers for 2500 ft elevation (doubt you live at sea level):

125 nosler ballistic tip @ 3682 (nosler's fastest load)
3.5" at 100 yds
5.8" at 200 yds (highest POI)
4.5" at 300 yds
-.7" at 400 yds
-10.5 at 500 yds velocity 2588 fps 1787 ft/lb

same at 4000 ft elevation
3.5" at 100
5.7 at 225 (highest POI)
4.6" at 300 approx. 3000 fps
-.3" at 400
-9.6" at 500 2645 fps 1941 ft/lbs

The bullet trajectory is a compromise. That 125 bullet ought to open up nicely yet hold together. If the deer is around 200-300yds aim at lower third of animal. At 500 yds aim at upper third. No stadia or turrets just range and shoot.

You have the rifle, no huge outlay of money to try it.

We are actually down around 1000-1500ft here. I have wondered about using lighter bullets. I know I won't be able to get them to touch the lands, as my reamer was made for 208 Amax but would still be much less than factory Weatherby freebore, so I don't see why it wouldn't shoot.

I'd try the 125s and see. Crunched for 1000 elevation. 3700 fps 59 degrees 30% humidity JBM program:

100 3.5 3414.7 3235.8 (fps followed by energy)
200 5.6 3139.1 2734.5
300 4.1 2880.5 2302.6
400 -1.5 2636.6 1929.1
500 -12.2 2405.4 1605.7

A 6.5-300 Weatherby shooting a 130 Berger VLD should be pretty flat. With some of the new powders it should make a 130 Berger fly really fast. I know years ago the guys that longrange hunted with them said they really killed and were flat. A 6-284 shooting the right bullet would also be very flat and a lot less recoil. Matt

holy cow....that kinda makes me want to build a 7 RUM. 4000 FPS with a 120 gr bullet, that's crazy!

I recently read where one guy is claiming 4200 fps with a 264 Winchester and 100 grain barnes ttsx. I think the number is substantially exaggerated, however, I'm betting you could get 3700 plus.

6mm 338 Lapua on the left. 4400 fps with 105 gr bullet.

I once got a reading of 3460 with my 300 Weatherby and 180gr Nosler BT's, If that was true it would have been cool but I never messed with the load anymore to verify after I posted velocities on here and some people got excited and said that was way out of line for that round and bullet weight. Who knows, I'm too cautious to push things.

I played around with a 300 RUM and 150s. Got up to 3860 or so with a 27" barrel with under moa accuracy.

Still would like to see the OP to try some light bullets in his existing rig.
