Finally STW

I had not planned on going that heavy. I have been thinking something along the lines of the Nosler 175gr accubond would be my go to bullet. According to Nosler 1:9 is what I seen recommended.

That should work fine, but why not have the option to go heavier in the future ? You never know when your tastes might change .......

I'd go with an 8.5 twist personally. It won't hurt with 150-60s and will shine if you decide to run 180s.

If it's not too late I'd think about the 28 nosler. It's much easier to find quality brass for in normal times. I say normal times cause everything is a crap shoot today.

My dad has an stw and I had one for a short time. First off the case length makes them hard to load vlds and they can be finicky to tune.

While I don't have a 28 nos, I do have a 30 nosler and can say it's very easy to tune with excellent brass life. The shorter case allows you to tune coal without worries of restriction in a 3.85-4 inch box.

Velocity performance is likely identical or so close you won't know the difference. But, the nosler is a modern and superior case design; shorter, fatter, way less taper, sharper shoulder and no belt. If building a rifle I think it's a better option and worth exploring.

Not trying to bash the stw but I feel the nosler is a far better choice that seems to fly under the radar. Likely due to its proprietary nature and marketing or lack there of.

The STW is one of my most accurate rifles in 175 grain partition I've have one shot kills on elk and moose and this is a old savage rifle !

Does anyone have experience with the US Optics TS line of scopes? I see them on sale everywhere and they seem like a good price for what your getting.

Take a look at GPO optics top scope with very good prices ! I have several and rank along with my zeiss

I'm not saying I disagree at all. Your above statement is probably very accurate. I have wanted an STW for a long time. Right wrong or indifferent it's an itch I need to scratch.

You won't go wrong the STW is one of my most accurate rifles and I have a bunch of Sako,WeatherBug and Ruger and this old savage holds its own !

I'll echo what Slick8 said. We had 3 STWs built back in the early 90s when it was a wildcat. We had to fire form cases out of 300 Weatherby cases. They can be very accurate when everything is perfect. They can be very finicky about bullets, powder weight and type, neck tension and CBTO. You will likely need patients to reload for it. I would plan on at a minimum using a full length bushing die. My father's STW would simply not shoot Berger VLDs. Their hybrid ogives might work though. There were none years ago. My rifle shot the best when neck tension was consistent and about 2 thou. So get an annealer to keep your case neck in consistent shape. I would think H1000 would shoot really good in it. I use that in 2 7mm LRMs I have. What you'll find with long over bore cartridges is they want a specific bullet powder neck tension combo to get consistent tight accuracy. Not trying to turn you to something else, just making you aware of what your wading into. Good luck.

By all means Get a 1/8 twist. I have had a 7mm STW for 20 years. When the barrel went south I built a 28 Nosler and never looked back nor would I go back. As stated above the length with heavies is a problem in the STW not in the 28. The magazine is where part of the problem is. The modern cartridge design is superior in the 28 Nosler. Ask any gunsmith who builds rifles which he prefers.

I will be having a Wyatt's box installed I hope that helps the length issues.

I have seen Meopta and many other brands on the web. I have always been reluctant to purchase anything from a company I wasn't familiar with. It makes me uneasy to say the least. This does look like a value packed optic but will I regret the purchase later?

I threatened to do this before and lost interest.
I need a good Coyote gun . I have a 24" standard barrel , I bet it has a 1/9 or 1/9.5 twist. Something in a 140 grain sounds interesting!
