These cases are Head Stamped "Novx". They are primed with a Genix Small Rifle primer and ready to be loaded. The case body is Stainless Steel and the Base is also Stainless Steel.

Shell Shock's NAS3​ cases are up to 50% lighter than brass cases, offer greater lubricity and will not abrade, clog, foul, wear-out or damage breach and ejector mechanisms. The cases offer greater corrosion resistance, higher tensile strength (2x stronger) and more elasticity than brass. NAS3​cases have been tested successfully to pressures over 75k psi. NAS3 ​cases eject cool to-the-touch and can be picked up with a magnet.


Currently we do not recommend reloading these cases. These are new cases and should be loaded and fired one time. Do not run an expander ball through the case mouth. Improper loading will lead to base separation.


The niche you might be suggesting has nothing to do with us, the general public. Single load with no reloading is really aimed at the military especially when the weight is concerned. You can bet that this is the goal from Federal, to re-establish their footing with the military to boost their earnings well beyond what they have currently.

I am guessing they came up with this case for the military 6.8 project that sig won with 6.8x51 / 277 Sig Fury. Instead of losing the R&D they changed to a LA 7mm to get velocity bump over SA 277. Interestingly I see Seekins has both 277 Sig and 7mm backcountry in their new lineup so all the naysayers that say these high pressure rounds will not go to public are wrong

Have bounced from a few different threads, but somewhere someone posted there were 70 skus that were going to launch with the new cartridge. Although a dozen or more were the savages, it means a few other guys are also going live.

I'm just happy to see new things introduced in the shooting market, some might be duds, some will work well. No one is forced to jump in any bandwagons, if cartridge is unappealing it'll go the way of 6.8 SPC, 30 TC and many others.

From my understanding they are claiming 3000fps on the 195 out of a 20in barrel. If that's correct it's going to eat my 28noslers lunch. I'm only getting 3060fps of my Nosler and 195s. Plus using Nosler brass it's dead in 3 firings. If you can reload the stuff this is going to be wild out of a 26in pipe. To bad the barrel life is going to be less than 500 rounds.

That would be faster than my 21 inch 7 rum and 195s with a brutal load of 869. I'm already expecting 5-700 rounds based off the last couple barrels so it's not way out of line for what I'm already rocking.

I could see it working in a certain band width that my current rum serves. It's a light weight rifle that smacks pretty hard right at the edge of most folks upper end recoil limit. It's not really setup for dialing, it's more old school mpbr type setup. It gets shot only rarely to check zeros and occasionally in the field. Load workup and zero was pretty quick, and I bought enough powder and brass (two jugs and 100 pieces of premium brass) the day it's was finished and a brick of primers will see it's first barrel and we'll in to a second. It's a worked over factory 700 with a mid tier barrel as well as stock. Not glorious but it is shockingly effective, heck as a loaner rifle it's got several caribou and more than a few black tail.

A decent factory platform, and a few hundred rounds used sparingly will last at least 5 years. If ammo hits in the range of the federal premium, a rifle plus a few hundred rounds could be a lot of wind bucking smack down power for a relatively decent price.

That's going to be selling point when it gets to market. I see they are testing the majority of their bullets on 20 inch barrel.

The problem is I saw the numbers, and they are round numbers. So that means that they are interpolated at best or probably just made up altogether. They didn't really differ that much in a 24 inch barrel.

I feel like they are looking to solve a problem that really isn't there

Does it say capacity anywhere ?
It looks smaller than a 280ai to me.
Just by eye i was guessing something like a steel case 7mm-08 running 80,000 psi

The OP or someone early on tried to say it was basically a 300prc necked down to 7mm but by everything I've seen so far it is basically a 7mm-06 not a 280ai as it doesn't have the sharp shoulder.

Call me crazy, but a lot of "new cartridges" have gone by the wayside because they were eclipsed by more powerful cartridges. That long standing trend was reversed when Hornady introduced a new "long range" cartridge that was less powerful. It surprised me that the 6.5 Creedmoor gained the popularity that it did. Some say it was all marketing hype, but I know as many of you do, that it was a cartridge that filled a niche among target shooters and achieved it with less recoil instead of more.

Then Joe Average Deer Hunter caught wind of it and well, you know the rest. Now after everyone noticed that the Creedmoor was relatively wimpy, we have the PRC's pushing bullets faster.

But this new Federal 7mm cartridge doesn't seem to me to have a bunch of niche customers who have been waiting for it. Its possible it may create its own niche, but I doubt it. Not as long as there are good Short Magnum 7's and Long Action 7' a plenty. 7mm Rem Mag is not going away.

7 Weatherby and 7 STW have more power. So I don't really see where the 7 Federal fits in, other than just an oddity that folks will try because it is new and maybe the steel case will attract some interest because it is different.

Not a prophet, but I'm betting it will be an endangered species in only a few years.

Short barrels with suppressors is where this fits in and still pushing the same velocities as most standard cartridges. 277 sig fury for example will do about 100fps better than 270 Winchester with barrel lengths at 18 and 22 respectively. There is 100% a market for this and is definitely where a significant sum of the market will go. Most guns can take the pressures, the weak link is brass as a material. Even Seekins is preparing to go that route with their PH3

It's got some serious support from some big names and at what is going to be a lull in the market as far as standard stuff for a few years. Best time possible to drop this so everybody can get on board while ammo and guns are plentiful. No one can really tell but it doesn't hurt to think outside of your own ego.

It's on my personal radar for sure, the ability to reload the cases will be the X factor.
Maybe with a combination of annealing and special dies it will be possible? There is going to be growing pains for sure
But with RL26 et al being non existent/prohibitively expensive I would be highly interested to know what powder they are using to get 100k psi in what looks to be a medium sized magnum case? Theoretically much faster burning powders right?
It would be cool to be able launch heavy .284 bullets to 3000fps+ with widely available powders in the varget-H4350 speed range
