Looks like it weighs at least 80gr or right at 50%. Long range bullets generally shed 50% when they work as designed. These aren't A-frames or Partitions.View attachment 68151
This is what was left of an ELD-X 175 gr loaded on a 28 Nosler, federal primer, 79.7 gr of Retumbo shot from a Proof research 26" and chronod at 3033 fps.
The bullet entered a mule deer at 150yrds behind the left shoulder.
The buck dropped in place.
The entry hole was 3" in diameter and destroyed the left lung and the liver , where it was found.
Not much mass retention
Maybe too Close?
That is essentially perfect performance for a LR bullet. When that 50% is shed is when the real work is done.
I don't think anyone would disagree that the 338 300gr SMK is a critter killing machine. I have recovered about 20 of them from DEER! They all weighed right around 150 grs. The deer were VERY VERY VERY DEAD.
If you use a long enough bullet, with enough SD to penetrate, and the front half shears off blowing a huge hole in the critter and then the rear stops further on......well that's as good as it gets.
Bullets are COMPROMISES. Too hard, too soft or just right for one shot will equal something totally different in another instance.
Shoot the longest, heaviest and highest SD bullet you can and stuff will fall.
