Eld-x vs berger...

View attachment 68151

This is what was left of an ELD-X 175 gr loaded on a 28 Nosler, federal primer, 79.7 gr of Retumbo shot from a Proof research 26" and chronod at 3033 fps.
The bullet entered a mule deer at 150yrds behind the left shoulder.
The buck dropped in place.
The entry hole was 3" in diameter and destroyed the left lung and the liver , where it was found.

Not much mass retention

Maybe too Close?
Looks like it weighs at least 80gr or right at 50%. Long range bullets generally shed 50% when they work as designed. These aren't A-frames or Partitions.
That is essentially perfect performance for a LR bullet. When that 50% is shed is when the real work is done.
I don't think anyone would disagree that the 338 300gr SMK is a critter killing machine. I have recovered about 20 of them from DEER! They all weighed right around 150 grs. The deer were VERY VERY VERY DEAD.
If you use a long enough bullet, with enough SD to penetrate, and the front half shears off blowing a huge hole in the critter and then the rear stops further on......well that's as good as it gets.
Bullets are COMPROMISES. Too hard, too soft or just right for one shot will equal something totally different in another instance.
Shoot the longest, heaviest and highest SD bullet you can and stuff will fall.

7mm rem mag/ 175 grain eld-x
26" barrel
68.0 grains H1000
3035 fps
1/4 moa
Picture is a 3/4 inch dot at 100 yards. Have not shot any game with it yet or any distance past 300 yards, but does great so far.

Kind of interesting.
I just shot my new build a 7SAUM.
Virgin Norma brass, fed 210, 65.0 H-1000 made 3043 out of a 27" tube with very short headspace.
The RM isn't as inefficient as some would have us believe.

What are your personal thoughts on stability from a stock Remington 9.25 twist at 4500-9000' elevation?

300 ultra mag
220 ELD-x
loaded to mag length.. I think I'm at 3.65 to the tip. It fits in the mag and cycle fine.
87 grains of RL26 this is a max safe load for the gun with RL 26. Acording to hornady it right at the edge of hitting pressure signs.
This was my 200 yard group before dialing the scope back to center.

My 300 ultra mag does not like the 212gr eld-x's but like.the 210gr berger vld hunters. Here is my 3 shot group with 210 vld hunters.

This doesn't surprise me. I suspect that's why Hornady factory ammunition only loads the 220gr for the 300 RUM.

My experience with the ELD-X thus far has only been the 143gr 6.5mm bullets. They both did their job but the animals did travel some before going down. The one deer it passed completely through the lungs and through the animal and I saw it hit behind the animal in the field. The second deer taken with one had a golf ball sized entry hole. I suspect it hit a rib on it's entry. Cartridge is a wildcat 30-30 necked down to 6.5mm with velocity right around 2400 for reference. I'm used to my 300RUM and the animals just dropping on the spot with 180gr Swift Scirocco. I'm going to be loading and testing the 220gr ELD-X in the 300RUM.

Curious if the Eld Match would work better, as the x seem to be a little too expansive... Thinking of trying the 225s in my new 300 Win. Although it could just be a bone hit and reduced impact as to why you saw such different performance Cobra. Time will tell I guess.
