Custom build

have been working on mine 3006 rem 700 went with magpul 700 hunter stock allthat is left is the barrel looking at remage 28 inch

Been looking for a 30 aught 6 long range, can't seem to find something I really like. And custom jobs from pros too much and noticed that a lot are not doing that caliber anymore. So now planning out to build my own.

Thinking a rem 700 receiver 3006 chamber not sure about barrel length don't want crazy 30 but not 22 either, along with twist and manufacturer.

Any suggestions welcome, I can make the shot but first time thinking custom. Looking for a 1k yard rifle.
I can vouch for Crown ridge barrel works & Northland shooters supply. I have got some outstanding prefit barrels from them. As far as length, I prefer 26" if I'm going short, I will go 22". Im not particularly fond of a 24" but that's just personal preference. I don't mind a 28" barrel. As far as twist, a 10 twist will cover just about any bullet weight that's feasible to shoot in a 30-06.

Purchase a bighorn or ARC action pick up a prefit from shillen criterion or pick one from the many others for that action. Pick the stock or chassis that fits what you want to do and be done with it. Don't use a 700 unless you already have it because by the time you fix it you will have spent more than the above and won't have the resale the above have if you change your mind.
I think Gunwerks has an action that is 850 so that would/could be another option and there is a whole list that will fill the bill above this price pointas well.
A properly tuned 700 is capable of very fine accuracy no doubt. to get it to the custom level with extractor small firing pin light firing pin good trigger square and true and minimum tolerance for the bolt body with a bigger bolt body or borden style bumps and a true thicker lug you are adding 650-800 to the original cost.
I picked up a nucleus and will do what I described this fall/winter. I have both a standard and a magnum boltface so undecided on what to do with it yet.

Friend, Long live the 30-06! The great Jack O'Connor loved the 270 Win., the '06's little brother (out to 600 yd.), but stated that at 1000 yd. he would choose the 30-06! In fact, over the past 50 years, more 1K competitions have been won by the '06 than any other caliber or load! If you are building a rifle for 1K shooting, I would use the Ackley 30 degree shoulder, slightly longer neck, use N560 powder (H414, 4340), mag primers, and long, sleek 200 gn. bullets. I know the 6.5 and 7 mm bullets are all the rage now, but they can't outperform the mighty 30 caliber! Good luck with your project!!!

Lots of good information so far thanks for the input. This would be my first custom rifle. Everything I have to this point is almost all stock standard. Glad to see there are plenty of options with the 06 that won't make me mortgage the house lol. I do reload my own rounds but haven't had to work anything yet, all factory ammo works pretty well up to 500 yards for me. I'm not a hunter by any means, meaning only game I've taken down is bird. I like to hit paper/steel. My father in law wants to do an elk hunt one day and once I move somewhere friendlier I'll probably get into deer hunts. I just enjoy the challenge especially when using a sling and no bipod.

Buying, a Rem 700 action or, Rifle, "can be",.. a "Crapshoot" on, later Models !
I bought, a NEW Rem 700, SS Short action, a couple of Months ago and found out that, it has, BAD Primary Extraction and I have to send it off to get the Bolt Knob, Re-Welded / Fit ( Timed ) !
My older 1982 model, Rem 700 is,.. FINE !
We own, 3 Tikka's in my Family and ALL "Shoot" around 1/2 MOA or less and have actions that ARE as, Slick as, Owl Chit !
Only Modifications, to the 3 Tikka's are, YoDave Trigger Springs and Comb height, "Pads" !
Tikka's ARE,.. "Cheaper" than,.. a "Custom" Rifle and shoot, VERY, nearly, as good !

What barrel length i haven't seen many Tika with more than 22"

First decide if you want a blued barrel , stainless steel ,or a wrapped barrel ,twist should be 1/10 . Length should be at least 26 /28 inchs , that will give you good Velocity. Conture of your barrel is where it gets tricky, #5 would be the smallest ,and a light Palma would be even better ,if your barrels to light it'll heat up to fast if it's to heavy you won't use it enough, one choice affects the others and so on . Remington 700 LA can have a clip Or magazine or the drop BDL floor plate . There's great aftermarket triggers for the 700 rem think (trigger tech), have you found a Custom gunsmith? Are you up to date on different barrel manufacturing process, cut-rifled VS buttoned ?, lots to think on and it can be overwhelming at times , stock choices, wood Fancy Or plain ,or synthetic, scope choices. This build will be more Specialized then your other 30 calls, but if built right you'll be happy forever, pm me if you wish ,cheers !!!.
Don't have permission yet for PMs or classifieds but no worries. I've been thinking 1:10 twist and I'd like 26" 28 too long 22 to short for me. Not too indifferent on blued or stainless thinking I do want a bull tough its for accuracy can't weigh more than the garand I lug around .

I might consider a carbon wrapped barrel in Sendero profile at 26-28" with a 10 twist on a trued 700 action.

That shouldn't break the bank.

What barrel length i haven't seen many Tika with more than 22"
Mine is, a 24 inch, .270 WSM, T-3 Tikka S Stl.
But, I haven't shopped for, a .30-06 Tikka so, i don't know what's, " available".
24" Barrel's are available in,.. 7 mm Mag, .300 WSM, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x55.
I THOUGHT you SAID that you, wanted to build, a "Custom" .30-06,.. per Post #1 on, a Rem receiver ??
With CUSTOM, you can put most ANY length barrel, you want, on the Action.
NEW Barrel and Gun Smithing to Install/ chamber, around, $800 and can buy, a slightly used, Tikka in .30-06 or, .270 Win ( same action & Mag ) for, $500- $600.
I HAVE, 2 Rem 700's and 2 Tikka T-3's and I personally, would NEVER, "build" another Rifle on, a Rem 700, Action !
Rem 700's have, a High Bolt lift ( thumb, hits Scope when, cycling ) Action, NOT as "Smooth", Many HAVE, Extraction "Issues", must usually, BUY an, $150.00+ after Mkt., Trigger ( Tikka's, just buy, a $10-$20 Spring ). And most, Tikka Barrels,.. ARE,. "shooters" !

I only recommended the 700 action because he should be able to find one cheap.

I don't own any either.
