Custom .22-250?

Intended purpose: Coyote gun. That's it….just a yote gun. I'd run it suppressed. Long barrel ok…even with a suppressor.

How would you build this rifle?

I just want to throw this out there…
I had a savage 112 I bought back in 1995 chambered in 22-250…
Wanted to get with the times so I had that same barrel punched out to 22 creedmoor… I only have a 1-12 twist but I fireformed all my 22-250 brass to 22 creed… And it was plenty accurate (3/4 moa)fireforming for prairie dogs to 400 yards… I am shooting 55 Sierra blitZkings and 60 vmax through it…
I know the 22 creed is based off different case but it is basically a 22-250 ackley with a 30* shoulder…
The 22 creed chambering solves the headache of figuring out the throat length you need for long bullets…
It's already setup that way…
Any short action should work…
I would get a setup with AICS mags…
Maybe do some steel competitions on the side…
The 60 vmax fireforming you can run with varget going 3550 out of a 26" barrel…
A lot of people run 20" barrels suppressed with the 22 creed
That length would make things a lot easier as a truck gun… They still get great velocity…
Fireformed 22-250 cases if I remember right are a little bit shorter than true 22 creed brass but you never have to worry about trimming and there is plenty of neck length to hold the bullets… just a brainstorming thought…
I wish I had a tighter twist for the heavier bullets but this setup only cost me rechambering of 250$ with the gunsmith…

Reading the posts here, sounds like a standard throat for the 77 SMK is adequate.

I'm sitting pretty good with LR…so no concern there.

I know 22 CM is the rage right now. I believe it's now a SAMMI cartridge?

First thing, your GS has to understand that an AI chamber requires .003"-.005" NEGATIVE HEADSPACE. Once this is established, you have 2 options; shoot factory or cheap handloads to fireform brass, or do what I do, which is use Universal etc, with a 1/3 load of normal max, COW (cream of wheat/Semolina) and twist in TP (toilet paper) tightly and work up until cases come out fully expanded but with slight rounding on the corners. Headspace will be correct in this condition. A further full power load will be necessary to fully form the brass. I use cheap Sierra 52g BTHP if I run bullets to form, which is rare.
If using TP, you have to poke it in tightly, I use a chopstick.

I'm a retired FF & I'm 50 years old. I've been reloading both rifle and shotgun ammo since I was 15 and 11 years old, respectively. I live down in south Alabama, RTR,. Around here I have to hunt a place to shoot 400 yards. They cut 2 tracks of timber this past year so I can actually set up on one track, shoot across a huge bottom on another track of land atw across to the 3rd track of land. That will get me out to a smooth ½ mile. I reload for each of my Browning BarII Safari Grade 7mm Magnum & 270 Winchester. I have an Illuminated Burris with windage and elevation dials on my 7mm & a plane Zeiss on my 270. B4 I swapped gun/scope combos, I had printed a dope card for my hand loads that went with my 270. I was shooting 140 Nosler Partions and 129 Barnes LRX bullets. Either load would shoot sub ¾" groups at a hundred yards. Anyway, I could hit a 5 gallon bucket at 880 yards. I was excited about that and was also proud of being able to do that with ammo i built and a factory built automatic rifle. I started out shooting at a 55 gallon drum BTW. I picked up numerous bullets off the ground just shy of my target while i was fine tuning my distance and stuff. I had to drive about 2½ miles to get to my target which was only 880 yards away. That was very aggravating. Most of the bullets i recovered could have been reloaded again, figuratively speaking of course. They just had tiny deformations on the tips and you could see the rifling marks. Regardless of all that crap I just typed I wanted to say that you guys amaze me with the wealth of knowledge y'all have. Here, around home, within a 50 mile radius, I don't know of anyone that is more intelligent or knowledgeable about guns, reloading shotgun or rifle ammo, than myself. I've never met another human that could remotely shoot with me. I site in 20 or 30 rifles a year and always end up mounting 5-10 scopes a year for friends, family, neighbors, etc. I've never charged a dime for any of it. I'm good at it and I enjoy it. I'm not arrogant. That's just the simple truth. Now beyond doubt there's at least 100 people that will read this that will be more knowledgeable and or better with a rifle or shotgun than I am. I just wanted to say again that you guys are truly amazing. I wish I could plug a USB port into some of y'all's heads and transfer some of that knowledge into my head. Seriously, y'all make me feel ignorant. I love it. Please don't put your collective feet on my throat too badlyfor this post. I'm just an ignorant redneck and self taught reloader that learned by trial and error way long ago before a home computer was even thought about. Much less the internet.
 
I have owned several 22-250's and understand the appeal of the Ackley. Having said that I would go 22CM. Understand if you can live with not going to meetings, secret hand shakes, a 12 step program, hat, tea shirt, and the assorted smug feeling of owning an 22-250 AI you will get the same result with available brass and loaded ammunition.

Just for reference I have stabilized 80gr Berger's and JLK's out to 1k yards with a 9 twist in a 22CHeetah. It's all about RPMs. At the velocities you will be shooting I wouldn't go any faster than 8t. There are a lot of good actions now days. For a budget build I would go Tikka or Rem. No limits build Defiance Deviant action 👊😁
 
If I was buying a new action to set up I would only consider a custom. If you want a 22-250 and have the brass do it! Set it up for 22-250 or ai it. shoot the barrel out and you still have a nice custom you can make anything you want.
This thread made me all excited about improving a 220 swift I have sitting around but after pricing out the dies, chamber work and everything I think I would rather just settle for what I already have.
 
akdad, 22/243 AI dies are easier to come by, and many gunsmiths have the reamer, 75g at 3550 and not trash the brass is real world, about 150 fps faster than a non hot rodded 22/250 AI with the 75s. Lapua brass takes a CIP spec reamer as it is much larger in the Web vs Winchester brass...hard lesson learned for many guys.

The .220 Swift, an amazing cartridge, one that I really love to shoot and hunt with... but... save your money on an AI version, P.O Ackley said it best in his book Volume 1 page 285. I did one many years back, and it never really outperformed my standard .220 Swift, and believe me I tried everything to make it happen, I am sure it's why Roy Weatherby dropped the .220 Weatheby Rock as well. Cheers
