Classified, What does ( I'll Take It Mean )

Another couple of Public questions that are misleading in response to a For Sale item:

1. What payment options are acceptable? This infers that you want to purchase and want to know how to pay. Other buyers are discouraged.

2. PM Sent! This infers that you want to buy, discouraging other buyers.
I don't see it as a final deal for anyone until the message is sent by the seller that it has been sold.

I do a lot of buying/selling guns on a couple of website up here in Canuckistan. My ads are very clear:

"Payment via EMT within 24 hours of agreement to purchase"

I live quite rural, and don't intend to wait for the post office to deliver a check that I then need to go into town to cash and then wait for the funds to clear. We're a quarter of the way through the 21st century; if a technoplegic like me can figure out and use EMT (Electronic Money Transfer) then anybody can.

The two websites on which I buy and sell don't even allow a potential buyer to post in a For Sale thread. You contact the buyer/seller to make an offer; once he responds and a deal is struck, the buyer sends the funds and then the seller ships the item. Yep, there needs to be a certain level of trust; I have had two problems (out of over 600 transactions over almost 30 years), both of which were eventually resolved. I make extensive use of the Trader Rating system on those sites; I will sell to an unknown individual but will only buy from another established member with multiple positive ratings.

Up here in the Great White North, our lizard overlords require any gun owner to have a licence (a PAL...Possession & Acquisition Licence) that must be confirmed before a firearm is sold. As much as I hate it...I will not even consider sending a gun to someone unless we do all the legally-required red tape BS. I have too much to lose, and the process takes maybe a couple of minutes online.

Buying and selling is easy if you accept that no individual transaction is an absolute must; plenty of attractive items come and go without my even trying to buy them, simply because I didn't feel comfortable dealing with a complete unknown quantity. And plenty of my ads sit for a few days or weeks waiting for somebody who wants to cross all the T's and dot all the I's. I don't need to sell these things to put food on the table; I can wait for a legitimate buyer.

If a buyer says "I'll take it!" and I then say "Sold!"...it's sold, and the ad is marked SPF (Sold Pending Funds). Nobody else need apply, even if they want to offer more money. But, again, the ad specifically states "payment within 24 hours"; if that period expires without payment or at least an explanation, then I either move on to another buyer who may have asked me to contact him or I just edit the ad back to For Sale.

Communication is critical; someone who just stops communicating, without an explanation, isn't worth my time. I provide updates on shipping, tracking, etc. all throughout the process, and I submit a Trader Rating as soon as I receive payment when I'm selling, or as soon as I receive the package when I'm buying.

Edited to add: One last thing: when the item is Sold and shipped out...for pete's sake, please take the time to indicate this in the ad, or delete the ad if you are allowed to do so yourself.

My question for those who use electronic payments other than PayPal, i.e. Venmo/Zelle, do you have any protection or recourse if the item never arrives for some reason?

I don't do any kind of e banking! To much opportunity for scammers. Every time the bank wants to set it up my accounts are hacked . No thanks ! Cash or bank money order for me .

A lot of the "hacking" is done when you hand your card to a server or put your card into a gas pump or other *** machine.

Unless you are 100% cash you are very much still at risk.

An "I'll take it" means absolutely nothing honestly. I feel this is an internal morality statement. You know how many people post "I'll take it" and then don't actually take it? For a myriad of reasons nothing is done until terms are met and things are exchanged. I try to list any and all info necessary in a classified listing and guys still don't read. It's the most frustrating thing in the world, reading/paying attention takes little to no skills at all yet it never happen. To the OP sorry bout your luck but it just seems like a typical classified transaction. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Unfortunately an "I'll take it" doesn't necessarily mean either party is satisfied quite yet.

I've got to step up my game a bit. What is the most widely used and accepted form of electronic payment today? Leaving out PayPal, of course.

And to stay on topic - I'm in Hespo's corner on this one. If the ad didn't indicate that checks were not acceptable then his (1st) "I'll take it" should have sealed the deal among established members. Most of what we do here in LRH classified is based on good faith.

For what it's worth I met the OP when he was selling something on this site. I said I'll take it and after a phone call I mentioned I would be driving by his house in next few weeks.
Long story short he held it until I was in his neck of the woods. He also took time to meet with me and help me with some questions.
I sure appreciated that. I do like it when the original add says what type of payment is expected.

I had posted : I'll Take IT " on a classified item on Long Range. I sent a PM' to the seller. He asked me if I could pay by electronic payment. I said I could not. I would send a USPS money order, or personal check. Which ever he preferred. Some time later he sent a PM back to me saying he had sold to some one else thru an electronic payment. That some else never posted a " Ill take it: on the listing. How does this strike you. There were no restrictions listed in the add about payment. Only the item for sale & the amount asked.
I personally prefer the electronic payment route as well.
Anything that allows me to avoid USPS works best for me.
FWIW, I also prefer not posting a public "I'll take it" as I prefer to not announce that to anyone with internet.
As such, if I miss an opportunity due to my prefs, so be it.
