chronograph going bad?

the load was made up in about 80 degree weather and temp in Africa will be around 70'S. right now it is dead on at 50 yards and we always check our guns before any hunting takes place especially when Cape Buffalo is the animal to hunt

That could account for up to 40 fps using the standard .6 f /1 f… warm the powder up to 80 F have it all set up run outside and send one sighing 60 seconds… at a target 40'yards away off hand. Good training for making that shot on your Cape Buffalo. BE SAFE ABOUT IT. Disclaimer lol Just a thought to see if it was the temp.

-7......yeah....it's best you don't leave the house...at least without Wearing pants, a spring jacket and running shoes...oh yeah... probably need socks too! And a big vote for temp swing...

I'd find a new chronograph and see if that flattens out the velocity swings, the new equipment is pretty amazing.

Get 3 friends together and each pitch in 150 bucks and get the new Garmin chrono

OP has enough money to go to Africa. Seems like buying a garmin is a drop in the bucket…

This is true for most handloaders who dont even travel.


As to the subject it could be a humidity issue. here is some notes from Bryan Litz on the subject... worth considering if traveling to such a different environment like Africa.

I have three chronographs, and I can do the same. I have the original LabRadar and F1 Chrony (I have not played with my Velociradar yet). If you want, I can coordinate with @akdad and send them your way.

I hope it is only a battery issue (I have been there before) and not a load issue gone bad.

for me I do not need a high dollar chronograph just to see velocity of my load, the little red box chrony did a great job and hopefully the battery or cold weather is the issue and if it is I will keep using it. as towards cost maybe you should check into how much you can go to Africa cheaper than bear, elk or deer hunt and you will see more animals in a week than you will see here in months. so if you are happy punching paper or banging steel so be it but if you are a hunter you do not know what you are missing in Africa. a plane ticket and 3000 will get you 6-7 animals in Africa. Merry Christmas

They're neat gadgets that work every time…and it fits in your pocket. Highly recommend.

I wish this was true. I can hunt OTC tags for all the species you listed every year here in MT.
No way the wife would let me go there by myself for a hunt. It would be a family trip…which makes it far more expensive…by a long shot. Perhaps one day.

I have been using an old school red box Chrony chronograph for about 20-25 years and have been happy with it for what I need, but yesterday I was testing some loads for an up coming trip to Africa and was using my 458 win mag and last summer the loads I settled on was 80 gr of AA2230 Fed 215 primer and 420 gr CEB Raptor bullet. now this load kicks them out at 2424 fps when done last. but now same lot of powder, primers, and bullets I am getting velocity of 2316 108 fps slower. temp yesterday was 18 degrees. I don't mess with the chronograph at these cold temps but we will have very cold and snow very soon and I will not be able to do load work then. any one have any thoughts on why my velocity dropped so much. weird 15 min ago it was very sunny and 19 degrees and now fog has moved in and everything is getting iced over. thank for your thoughts

The colder my loading room gets the wackier my electronic scales get.........

There are a few signs to look for that would indicate that your chronograph is going bad or has already done so.

1. It'll start hanging with a different, unfamiliar group of fellow velocity measuring tools. Caught up in the wrong crowd all of a sudden.

2. If it starts smoking it may have gone bad. If it starts smoking and lies to you about it it's likely a bad apple at this point.

3. Same goes for excessive drinking or other substance abuse. A sure sign that it's done gone bad on ya.

4. In this day and age everyone has tattoos so that don't mean nothing in itself…however tattoos on the chronographs face, neck, or knuckles is a dead ringer: good chronographs don't make that kind of statement. It's gone full bad! Moreover, if it has dyed its hair pink, blue, purple, or green AND has more than two face piercings of some kind, it may not have gone bad, but it is BAD NEWS nonetheless and you do well to steer clear!!!

5. Rap music. Take note of what your chronograph likes to listen to these days. Gospel hymns, folk, rock, 80s hair metal, glam metal, heavy metal, slam metal. death metal, black metal, doom metal, stoner metal, punk, country (but NOT new country - ) are all wholesome and high quality music. Pop music is indicative of a lack of soul but not necessarily bad, just dead inside. Electronic/techno stuff is suspicious at best. Rap music almost certainly means it's gone bad. And dear lord if it's listening to that unholy country-rap urban cowboy abomination just put your chrony out of its misery already and "accidentally" aim low next time….

6, An antagonistic attitude towards any and all authority, especially teachers or law enforcement. If an "F the po-lice" sticker mysteriously appears on the chrony, it's gone bad for sure.

7. Inexplicable surplus of hard cash. If it suddenly has money to blow with no paper trail and ain't working any high paying legit job, something fishy is going on. Probably illegal. Probably it's gone bad.
