.308 win is perfect for what you want to do.
338WMI am looking for advice on caliber for a custom build.
Max range: 600yds
Game: Medium to large sized game
Rifle Specs.: Barrel length less than 26 inches (I want the rifle to be easy to maneuver and carry but hit like a hammer)
I was originally thinking 300 WM but with a barrel less than 26 in I don't think it would be a good choice. What about 300 WSM?
I'm right the opposite, I'm nostalgic with the ole belted work horse.Another vote for 7mm Rem Mag. Nothing wrong with the larger calibers, but they sure do add a lot of recoil to the equation. You seem to be leaning toward the 300 WSM. I'd pick that over the 300WM personally.
I've owned three, 300 Win Mags and they all came with 24" barrels. Go read that test I posted, it's very fascinating. I believe a WSM would work better with the shortened barrel.I thought it was recommended that 300 WM be barrelled in a minimum of 26 in. That's why I mentioned 300 WSM.
Will a short mag be more efficient than a long mag with a shorter barrel?
I do want to run heavy for caliber bullets.
What's the old saying, the 300WM may not be the best answer, but it's never the wrong answer? I get it.. it's a great cartridge! Personally I'm a fan of not having more recoil than necessary because it affects my ability to shoot accurately when you start getting above a 30-06 or so. Whatever works for you. There is so many capable cartridges now, what cartridge to get is almost a pointless question. We should be asking "which ones shouldn't I get?"I'm right the opposite, I'm nostalgic with the ole belted work horse.
Can't beat the 30-06!!! With today's powder and projectiles, it's superb! Hornady Superperformance ammo has it shooting like the 300 Mag!What's the old saying, the 300WM may not be the best answer, but it's never the wrong answer? I get it.. it's a great cartridge!
