Building a 6.5 PRC, annnnndddd there’s no bullets.

lots of boom sticks for sale, but very little to make them go boom. IMO it's about time to stop buying firearms until ammunition and/or components become available once again.

Hello Sir,

If you are still looking for bullets and such for 6.5 PRC, I might be able to help a fellow Texan out. I have some 143 ELD-X bullets and 2 boxes of Hornady Brass , maybe can find a few primers and powder but I can't ship and I know Texas is a big state so I'm north of San Antonio up by Blanco if you are still in need. I'm packing for a hog hunt tonight so may not be able to answer until tomorrow but Please let me know if I can help.

Regards

So I finally started a 6.5 PRC build on a blueprinted trued rem 700 action. Ordered a proof research barrel 28 inch. Things are looking good. Then I went to go buy ammo. Looking for 6.5 PRC 143gr eldx. Nah, fam.

if you can't find it, build it right?

ordered an RCBS kit with 6.5 PRC and 300WM dies. Easy, right? Nope. Can barely find the bullets (might pull from old 6.5 CM shells), no brass, and not a large rifle primer anywhere even for the highest bidder. Madness.

Any advice wound be appreciated to get a 6.5 143 grain bullet to fly out of a gun at near 3000fps. That was the goal of this project.
You might call Berg. I know they have 156 Elite Hunters in stock and 140's they are scheduled to run in Jan. While they won't sell to you direct they might be able to tell you which of their dealers they've recently shipped to.

Not to brag or hammer on you but food for thought. The last time this happened when O'bummer first got elected I swore to myself that I was not going to get caught like that again as I knew it would happen again. It's going to be a way of life for us to always have something going on driving shortages of reloading components and ammo. I spent alot of $$$ over a few years buying enough components and ammo so that I would be set for the rest of my life. Now, there's always a new powder I'd like to get my hands on and I'd really like to get one more 8 lb jug of H1000 and at some point when it shows back up again I will. But until then I have plenty, one more would just be insurance that I'll never need anymore.
This is also the main reason that I decided to go with a 6.5-06 AI instead of a PRC because brass has always been difficult to get for the PRC and now you can't even get ammo. I'll never run out of 25-06, 270, or 30-06 brass so that will never be a problem for me going with a 6.5-06. I would have preferred to build a 6.5 PRC as no need for custom dies, fireforming, etc but the reality of the world we live in today made me compromise.
I wish you the best of luck in your search for reloading components. Unfortunately I don't think this situation is going to improve quickly so in the meantime you might think about compromising and trying whatever the best bullet is you can get and the same goes for powder and primers. You might not be able to get max performance but at least you might be able to get shooting until what you really want becomes available.
Sounds like you are just getting started reloading. In normal times primers are only about $35 - 40 for a brick of 1,000. You might consider watching and grabbing them as they become available even if they aren't you're first choice ie; stnd long rifle instead of long rifle match, etc..... Powder and primers have a nearly unlimited shelf life as long as you store them in a cool, dry place. I live in the west so humidity is not an issue. If you live somewhere that it is a few thousand primes don't take up much space in the gun safe.

Best of luck friend.....

Shooters Pro Shop still has some 142 LRAB's in stock, I ordered 3 boxes of 'em..

I just used the Berger 144 hybrid out of my 6.5 PRC on 2 PA whitetails and both dropped immediately. I see those available. You could also use the 130 OTM and 135 Hunter. Both of those are great bullets and in stock at several places. Don't get stuck on one bullet. You rifle might like something different.
Brass and factory ammo have been hard to find for this round since it came out.

I will look but I am sure that I can get some CCI large Rifle Primers near me.

Someone is selling a nice 6.5 PRC in classified on this site that caught my attention. Really piqued my interest but I know it would take a near miracle to find components. I'm grateful to have stored ample supply for the calibers I shoot but I'm still aware this crunch may take quite a while. Throw in the new socialist anti gun administration coming in and gets even cloudier. Thank God for Trump getting ACB ing the high court. Molon Labe

The supplies come in but go out fast. It's somewhat luck of the draw if you get any ammo related supplies these days. This time it is solely the public that's sucking it all up, unlike previous when the DHS and other entities were making major purchases. Supplies will be readily available on shelves again when the public is all stocked up. We've seen this movie before. I have to say, this run on ammo of every kind seems truly ridiculous.

Drop your bullet weight. Choices are still sparse but some pretty good bullets are still around. While not a 6.5 PRC, I run shorter length creeds but I shoot 123s and 130s. In 19-20 barrels I shoot the 123s at 2 separate nodes, one at 2820 and one near max at 2960. The 130s at 2750. You have to break 800 yards for it to matter. In a PRC you'd have to break 1000. Something to consider.

Right now 12/5/2020 @ 7:00 P.M. EST Shooters Pro Shop has Nosler 140gr Custom Competition HPBT bullets, blems (that I shoot all of the time) 100 count for $25.95 plus shipping and they ship bulk so you pretty much pay as much for one box as for five boxes.

I was lucky when I got my 6.5PRC that I found a ton of brass, Hornady ammo, and RL26. As it all disappeared from suppliers shelves I noticed all I can find around is 270 stuff so I have been re-visiting the .270 Win. It is still pretty easy to find 270WSM brass too. Just saying, if you haven't had your chamber cut yet the 150 and 170 Grain bergers are pretty impressive as well as the 145 grain Hornadys. Won't help your primer situation, but brass and bullets seem to always be available for the .277s.

If you're near Houston I can get you primers and I may have some bullets, I'll have to check on those.
