For my SxS I use the Apple Ipad mini. If you go with the Ipad, make sure you buy one with wifi + cellular. Cellular is needed to get the gps chip. I use GAIA GPS for the trail tracking system. They have a free version but their best program will cost about $59 per year. I first tried using the Garmin Overlander unit with their trail system before I went to Gaia. For me, Garmin couldn't compare with Gaia.

I also use an Ipad for moving map GPS (& Strelok & Hornady & an OBDII code reader & ...... ). It lives in an Otter case and I rarely ever take it out. ColonelGoose's point about getting the wifi+Cellular version is crucial as only that version has the internal GPS chip-set. Without that you'll need an external GPS device connected to it. Note that you do not have to enable it's cellular connection if you don't want to. Each rig has a RAM holder and a power cord for the Ipad.
Currently I am using Gaia, but they were recently bought and I've not been too happy with some of the changes. I've on and off looked at OnX and need to do so again.
With Gaia you need to do any route planning and mapping via their web page. Then sync the Ipad by turning it on within a wifi zone. Can do waypoints on the fly on the Ipad, but I've found anything more to be difficult if not impossible.

That's not really true.
Onx offroad gives sorted trail data. By trail I mean vehicular trail data. It will tell you if it's a dirt bike trail, or a 4x4 trail for instance, and trail difficulties.
Onx hunt with just give you the fire road number…and sometimes just label a dirt road as "back road."
They don't use the same layout either and offroad can be used with CarPlay, for those that can do that with Apple car play.
Edit: actually I just realized that onx hunt pops up on car play too. I'm sure most here don't care either way.

That's not the position of OnX as I recall from a Q&A I read.
Regardless I have Ride Command in my General that seems to work well.
Check your layers as I live in the vicinity of 3 National Forest networks and if OnX er's it's on the side of showing trails that may not be currently maintained.

My wife is an apple fan. I'm thinking about buying the iPad Air 11 inch.
What brought this on was going out over the unknown mountains and got going down a ravine of no return. In my off road racing and rock climbing Can Am x3 turbo RR. The road started out as an unused two track road just riding the brakes in maybe a dirt bike trail for the super brave. It turned into a 2 hour ordeal to get from 8000 feet down to 5500 feet and jeep trails. It's happened before, but never this bad.

I have a Can-Am SxS and ride with several different groups! The largest percentage of us use Samsung tablets but others use Apple Tablets! I used to use an 8 inch Samsung tablet but eventually ran out of room on it's hard drive which was 32 GB, so bought a larger Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e, which is a 10.5 inch tablet and has 128 GB hard drive! I've got a number of GPS apps downloaded including OnX Hunt, OnX Offroad. Gaia GPS and Avenza! It's never let me down, It's bright enough and I love it's large screen! It's the tablet I use now!
I don't rely on or need 3D but Gaia GPS is my favorite off road app so far!
However, I recently bought another Samsung Tablet with an even bigger hard drive, in case I eventually run out of room again and I'd advise you to buy the largest hard drive you can. My new one is a Samsung Tab S9 FE with a 256GB hard drive!
