So you guys talked me into a custom build for my next sheep gun. I will also have to use it for a moose and I am going on a combo hunt. I opted for a 300 WSM trying to balance velocity and bullet weight as well as recoil and accuracy for a versatile back country/light weight packable rifle. Fusion Ti action, magnesium xlr action, 22 inch proof research barrel. Debating on brass and bullet. Maybe a 185 berger for everything? Or a 168 berger for lighter game and a 200 A-frame or 215 berger for moose and elk. Thoughts?

This is my load in my WSM

Lots of people have posted good results with H-4350. Its good for me to use a faster powder with the shorter barrel. How far off the lands? Velocity?

If there are any fatal flaws with my build it's not too late to change something, but time is short. We will be ordering parts this coming week.

I have a Magnesium XLR stock and like it, but would not be what I would put on a lightweight rifle. I would go with a carbon fiber Manners. Just my opinion.

Make sure you match the twist rate to the range and type of bullets you intend to use, as well as a good muzzle break to keep you on target. I have been using Barnes 168 TSX and TTSX for both Elk and deer for over 10 years. Last years Elk was 390 yds one shot and down.

Hard to beat the Berger 210vld hunting for accuracy. This bullet in Norma brass wins alot of 1000 yard matches. I hear it kills just as good. This bullet gets lots of love on this site. Started at 2850fps still has 1200 ft pounds at 1000 yards.
Good luck on your hunt.

My thought was a 1:9 or 1:8 twist. Lightest bullets will be 165 and heaviest 215. Will a 1:8 be a problem? My 300 win mag in browning x-bolt is a 1:8. I have typically shot the 215 bergers but it does well with the 185s as well. Factory 180 Barnes are about 1 MOA. Haven't shot lighter than that.

Well, I will say my Win brass needed 0.002" trimmed off the neck to make it roughly true. Turned to 0.013".

Shooting 0.5" 5 shot with Berger 180's and RE26 at 72.5 gr. shot a couple 0.4" 3 shot groups tuning this load. Oal just set to Berger load sheet number.

im turning back to 212's now....after I get a 350 legend deer load dialed in this year!

My last build I used the Berger twist calculator.

As far as Barnes are concerned, using RL17 and the 168 TTSX with a .050 jump I get cloverleafs at 100 Yds. Remember when setting up either Barnes or Bergers they both like to jump.
