Best 7mm cartridge?

140 Grains, 3,000 FPS, 16″ Barrel
There have been all kinds of numbers circulating, but the facts are that a 140-grain bullet will attain a velocity of more than 3,000 FPS from a 16″ barrel. Exact chronographed velocity won't be finalized until it's checked in SIG Cross production rifles but at least 3,000 FPS is certain. Obviously, longer barrels are going to mean even faster speeds.

1-8" 7mm Rem Mag 100%. That's what i shoot for my all-around target/plinking long range gun. Very tunable, you can run it as hot or mild as you want, brass and dies are readily available, loads are very well documented with a variety of bullets and charges. I only shoot the 195's and I can squeeze 2940fps out of it with RL26 (she's pretty spicy!!), but my more standard, brass-friendly load is with RL33 or Retumbo in that 2830fps range. It's a hammer at 1k, easily gets you out to a mile, recoil is no problem, i can go 100+ rounds without a cleaning, and barrel life is easily 1500+ (last barrel I swapped at 1650 mostly because i wanted to go to a heavier profile).

I wonder if Hornady will come out with a 7mm PRC, may be a good wildcat to give a try.

There were rumors that a 7mm PRC would come out at the SHOT Show in January. Maybe next year. I was surprised how few new 300 PRC rifles were at the show.

Saw that thanks. It is still going to be an lr target rifle so a hot 7mm cartridge might not be the best. If it was just an elk rifle, I'd pick 28 nos or 7stw too.

Hey y'all I'm kinda new to shooting really far. I got a 6.5 PRC right now but I'm not really happy with the rifle and I was looking at getting a new one. I really like 7mm (Especially the 195gr EOL) I'm just curious what cartridge I should shoot. It's going to be a long range target gun (around a 1000) and my elk rifle. Any recommendations for cartridges or rifles? I was considering building one but I'm hesitant because I don't really know what I'm doing. (I was looking at 28 Nosler but the brass is expensive and I'm not quite sure if I need that much rifle)

I have had really good luck with my Remington BDL 7mm RUM shooting the (195 EOL) at a 1000 yards plus . I have killed 3 Elk with it 1 at 750 yards and the other 2 at over a 1000 yards it is probably the best long range gun I have in my safe as far as The 284 caliber . It's a little on the heavy side but it is still a great gun .

I use reload 7mm 168 berger with retumbo powder in three 7mm rifles all shoot fine killed lots of elk and deer a long range once I got the right powder load from Mike at gunwerks

Save yourself time and frustration, 7mm Weatherby Mag. I have 3 7mms, and the Weatherby is the best by far. I reload and I am over 10 loads on five boxes. I bought 2 boxes of factory and all the rest (13) is unprimed brass, $31@. Barrel has at least 1200 rounds thru it and looks great. I am going to pick up another in a Vanguard.

I favor the 7mm STW. Mine has a 1 in 8 twist Shilen barrel. Great with heavy bullets on Elk and screaming fast with deer class bullets. Have a 7mm rem as well but it rarely leaves the safe.

i get 2960 with the 7 RM and retumbo. federal brass. they hold up pretty well.
