Best 7mm cartridge?

A browning Xbolt Hells canyon will have a 1-8" twist in 7mm rem mag that will handle your Berger 195 with ease and you can find once fired or new brass for cheap. Your barrel will last way longer than a 28 Nosler, won't kick as hard, you won't need a muzzle brake, special expensive dies and all out of a moderately priced factory rifle.

Will a 195 fit in the magazine without being seated way deep?

1-8" 7mm Rem Mag 100%. That's what i shoot for my all-around target/plinking long range gun. Very tunable, you can run it as hot or mild as you want, brass and dies are readily available, loads are very well documented with a variety of bullets and charges. I only shoot the 195's and I can squeeze 2940fps out of it with RL26 (she's pretty spicy!!), but my more standard, brass-friendly load is with RL33 or Retumbo in that 2830fps range. It's a hammer at 1k, easily gets you out to a mile, recoil is no problem, i can go 100+ rounds without a cleaning, and barrel life is easily 1500+ (last barrel I swapped at 1650 mostly because i wanted to go to a heavier profile).

I'm putting things together for a 7 Sherman Max now. 14+ grains of powder less than my buddy's 28 Nosler will push the 195 only 50fps slower (his load is 84.x gr of n570=3100fps). Barrel life and brass life of the Nosler is a small fraction of the Max. And if you want to shoot the load above, you have to have a custom chamber in your Nosler, it was designed to shoot 162gr. If you push the 195 in that case, it is deep in the powder. As long as you're making a chamber, make it efficient
I would like to see the numbers that show the 7sm is that close to a 28nos. Not saying it can't, but 14+ gr of powder is a lot of energy that is doing nothing. Sounds like something is missing here.
For a target rifle, I would do a 7mag because of easy to find cheap ammo and good barrel Life. For a hunting rifle, 28nosler for me. One of my favorite cartridges

7mm LRM. A lot of people have pawned it off because the original Hornady brass sucked. But Gunwerks said they'll have their brass available for 7mm LRM in a few months. Gunwerks says they make their tooling to their specs and have ADG make the brass using their supplied fooling. This means the 7mm LRM will have excellent brass available for it now. It has the capability of pushing 180s to 3100+ and 195s to 2950-3000. Data I've seen in the past shows 180s around 3000 but using the weak Hornady brass that lasted a few shots. This cartridge falls right in the middle between the 7mmRM and the 28 Nosler, or about perfect for a long range 7mm round.
Every 7 LRM I've built sucked, it's not all the brass, there is something not right about it, even changed some of the specs and it still sucked, accurate but would not run where it should for the capacity, I can run with it or past it with a propper 7 SAUM, 7 Blaser, 7 MAX or 7 Mag all of which I've run easily the most disappointing chambering I've done regardless of brass.

It's that close, chambered barrels #1 and #2 of the 7 MAX and also run a 28 Nosler, I wouldn't do a Nosler today!

Funny you say that, my mentor/friend that retired from gunsmithing said he hated the 7rm and could never build one that performed. I've only owned two and sold them both

How do you know it's not the brass? There isn't another option, it's either Gunwerks branded Hornady brass or 375 Hornady brass. Is there some other brand that you tried that I'm not aware of?

So the rifle specs for both rifles were exactly the same, yet 14 grains of powder only added 50fps? Was the Nosler reamer a saami spec with the 195s?
The #1 7 MAX was my HCA carbon barrel that switches with my 28 Nosler and both are the same length, both ADG brass. I don't remember the length on #2 but it's right in the same ball park. No, the 28 is built to run 195 Bergers, I don't have any saami reamers, each one is designed to do a specific job.

Is there a write up somewhere explaining the powders used, etc? I don't want to derail this thread too much.
