Best 1400m short action round

From what I remember IT got to be base on 308 winchester or around that.

Will look to find all the rule, you made me see that IT moore complex that I that.

Would think about 7mm-08 fast twist

If you want to accomplish more than just getting to the target, I suggest the 7mm-08 Ackley Improved shooting the Hornady 190 A-tip. You might experience a little more recoil but practice will help negate that.

I'm not a fan of the 7mm-08 cartridge but with your rules, these numbers will outshine the 6.5mm cartridges and bullets.

Enjoy the search!

😊

6.5x47 if 6.5mm or 7 SAW if 7mm. Both are super easy to tune. The 7 SAW has Alpha brass and small rifle primer pockets or you can use lapua Palma. The 162's and 166 A-Tips are a good balance of speed and BC.

Hi Everyone,

In my area we have a compétition call elr junior that is up to 1400m. Trick is you got to shoot a small action caliber with 308 Bolt face maximum.. So no magnum or short mag...

Have done it with my 308 last years, first try at IT, whent fine, 615m-800m-900m,with me missing at 1075m, mistake in scope d'ajustement.

Would think about 7mm-08 fast twist or 260 rem but I Do know that im on the oldie whent IT come to rifle cal😅

If you where bulding a rifle for that kind off competition what would if be?
May I suggest....
Consider die cost, get a full length bushing sized and a seater with a micro adjustment stem. Bullet cost/availability. Brass availability. How many loads will I get from a pound of powder? Large rifle primers for loads over 30 grains (IMHO)
How much do you want to spend on a barrel? I'm A firm believer in Winchester M-70. Long or short action it'll still shoot what the barrel is chambered for. I'm not to much of a "flavor of the month" action follower.. The M70 been around long enough that all the tricks are well known. Total cost of the kit will depend on your budget. Barrel, trigger, stock, glass 'smith fees. Just tell the man what your expectations are and insist on an estimated build time. Premium barrels are 8 to 15 months out from time of order. Didn't mean to get long winded. But this is what I'd do in your shoes. HTH

It's hard to ignore the 6.5 Creedmoor despite all the haters on this forum.

It's immensely practical and components are dirt cheap and widely available and very easy to load for and factory ammo can be had cheaper than almost all cartridges other than 223.

It would also be very easy to sell should you tire of it one day due to its immense popularity.

I would suggest looking at the 7mm SAW or 7-08 SRP from Alpha in an AI chamber, only because the range will require as much velocity as is accurate and you can push the SRP case a little harder and I believe the SAW has a slightly longer neck, could be mistaken about that though.

I have a 6.5x55 AI which will approximate 6.5-284 velocities but I use a single shot Pierce action and don't have feeding issues.

There are some excellent 6mm cartridges as well.

I've got no dog in this fight but the 260AI sounds like it's fits the bill. I'd want a little more than 6mm going that far.

Someone else suggested the 277 fury. I'd be tempted to try it just to be different. The hybrid cases are available from time to time at American reloading. I use them for 308. One pass through a 308 die and they're good to go. I'm sure you could make 260's out of them also.

It's an 80k psi case. Load it hard and drive the snot out of it.
