6.5x300 WBY

I'm glad Peterson is making some of the Weatherby Cartridges. I just got 100 pieces of 6.5x300 peterson brass a few days ago.
I have a 6.5 CM that puts them in under a half inch consistently and better when the nut behind the barrel does his job. George Muska made my first custom rifle way back in the 80's it was a 280 express and it was a tack driver. So with that memory I have decided to try the 280 again but have had no dealing with the AI I figured I would pick the collective brains on here By The Way thanks to all that have answered and given input it is appreciated. NickI am looking at the 6.5 06/ 280 AI so far the folks I've been chatting with seem to think 6.5 is the better option. Having never used the 6.5-06 before but having shot a very boring (read small group consistency) 6.5 CM I like this caliber as well. So now comes the note taking and comparisons, I have found several threads on here extolling both as being great shooters when the nut does his job I will look at powders and loads as well as efficiency to try and make a decision. As we all know "I think " are scary words.
Thanks for the input and I am still taking arguments ether way guys.
I have 308, 300 WM, and even a 338 lapua mag. Soooooo I thought back to earlier times and want to revisit the 280 world but had no experience with the AI.If that is a concern, I am surprised he did not pick a .30 caliber.
This boils down to personal preference, and you must decide which route to take for your intended purpose. I prefer .30 cal (.30 Lara, 3 .300 WM, 2 .300 WSM, .30 Gibbs, 2 .30-06, .308 Win, 2 7.62x39, a .30 M1) over .28 cal. In 2012, I was going to build myself a .280 AI but went with a .270 AI instead because the body in their brother has one.I have 308, 300 WM, and even a 338 lapua mag. Soooooo I thought back to earlier times and want to revisit the 280 world but had no experience with the AI.
whats tour thought on the barrel length and caliber do you have in mindOP is shooting targets, probably wants more than 800 rounds of barrel life.
I think the .30-06 would still win big matches, but... there aren't enough of the high-end shooters shooting it anymore, there are just too many other calibers to play with these days. .30-06 Springfield with a 180gr/190gr or 200gr match bullet at somewhere around 2700 to 2850 fps is still pretty formidable on the competition range in the LR game. The winner circle calibers are, really... a matter of mathematics, the numbers... the more one caliber is used (for whatever reason) the more it shows up in the winner's circle. Just my 0.2 CheersMy initial thought was always "how well does it currently shoot"? The 30-06 won 1000 yard shooting matches for years. It certainly bucks wind better than some smaller calibers. What is the concentricity of your barrel? Ackley talked me out of a barrel change as my Rem 700 barrel was one of the most concentric he had measured. 30-06AI would boost your velocity slightly and be fun to play with. You'd get more reloading for sure.
My 1959 Browning FN Safari 30-06 shoots sub-1/2"MOA with 180gr NABs. I'd never change it!
Many variables based on Op's likes and preferences, not to mention recoil.whats tour thought on the barrel length and caliber do you have in mind
Really didn't think that one through. I have seen and used the 30s with great results and to be honest I haven't even put a round through the 30-06 yet but have purchased a couple of boxes and will see how she does. It Was used as a meat pole for a long time and I just didn't like the idea of getting behind an 06 in feather weight and since I have started punching paper more than hunting just jumped at the chance to rebuild. But I am considering keep at least one set up for hunting so I may have to completely redo my thought process here. Everyone has given some great ideas and an 06 AI looks really good I like a good hold on the round for something like that. That and the reduction in taper of the case from head to shoulder. Do you need a barrel change? 30-06AI would be an easier-on-the-pocketbook conversion.
er half will probably launch a few from it as wellMany variables based on Op's likes and preferences, not to mention recoil.
