I went the pre-fit, do-it-yourself route a try a few years ago and am now going on my fourth barrel….IMO a great move! My initial motivation was the high shot volumes/barrel replacements consumed for PRS competition. I have used Savage and Bighorn actions. Doing it yourself saves time and money! I soon started on a hunting rifle. They have all worked out perfectly, with performance the same or better then my jobbed-out customs. I'm not a machinist, possessing only basic skills…….It's not difficult and can be performed with the tools you have listed. The most difficult part was removing original Savage barrels. I would add a pipe wrench to your list for used, throwaway take offs. Use a good anti-seize on the threads of the pre-fits.

Thanks! Spotted him on day one. Finally got my shot after four days of hard huntiing. Buffalo area in Wyoming.
I lived in Buffalo for 1.5 years before moving to the west side in the Bighorn Basin. There are some nice whitetail over there for sure.
Did ya get him scored and mounted?

Update. Everything has gone extremely smooth except my front action screw is a tad to long. Cannot open / close bolt when all the way torqued.

Next steps are taking care of that, getting muzzle brake and installing my scope.

That's awesome you put it together. Some satisfaction also when you start slinging some lead fastballs downrange. I had mentioned I was building another one when we chatted. Here it is. Finished it 2 weeks ago. 6.5-284 Norma

I've already found a retired machinist and I've talked to him to get him to teach me how to use the mills and lathe. I've been looking on Grizzly. My next step is to chamber all my own barrels. I'm in trouble I think with my wife. I told her it's gonna be my retirement hobby.
make her a rifle then borrow it
