Anyone machine their own muzzle brakes?

.30 Gibbs with Ross Schuler 4-port brake 3 of 3.jpg

@JuddL, I considered Harrell's but ended up with Schuler's. I gave him the dimensions of my barrel, and he tapered it closely to match my barrel at no additional cost. This is on my .30 Gibbs. $100 to thread the muzzle + $37 shipped Schuler 4-port brake.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to make one . I have tryed maybe a Dozen different styles, shapes , sizes ect.
I have better things to do like shoot, reload , hunt or and try to make the Wife happy ! 😂😂
Best of luck to you though if you try it !!

Most of the common ones out there are basically the same design. Seekins has some that do work and are a quite simple machining project.

That's actually not correct - making your own brake that incorporates a design covered by an unexpired patent would be patent infringement, because US patent law grants a patent holder the right to prevent others from making, using, or selling something covered by the patent's claims.

I agree that making your own and quietly using it presents a lower risk of legal problems, because a) the patent holder is less likely to find out and b) the damages are smaller (just one lost sale instead of multiple).
No, you can copy anything you want for your own use without issue. Only trying to sell would be an infringement.

Harrells Precision brakes are cheap enough and effective so it's hard to make one yourself for what they charge for theirs.
I'll check them out. The reason for my original question was my dad asking adding the BOSS to a 300RUM he just bought. I know it can be done, and my brother in AZ had one installed on his by a local gunsmith there. He and I both have lathe and mill. He has machine shop experience and I'm a structural engineer. Not afraid to try and don't care about legal questions because the intent isn't to sell.

Nice and clean. That brake isn't a complex job, and cheap! How well does it work?

I know someone who made their own from a left over piece of barrel (see pictures). They certainly didn't save them selves any money because it took many, many hours to "do it right". Probably would have been better off working a few extra hours of overtime and to pay for a cnc machined brake. A trained gunsmith could have done the job in a fraction of the time it took. That said, their is pride in a job well done by you! Besides, this is a hobby and if you want to do it… I say go for it (assuming you have the proper tools, training, knowledge, and understand the risks).
