Anyone here fans of the 25-06?

I put a load together for my Dad this year with the 90 gmx. His old Remington 722 had a real short action in 257 Roberts. He rebarreled it to 257 AI which was pumping those 90 grain GMX at 3360 fps. They shot accurate enough but they didn't open up very well on my gel test at 400 yds. So I'm kinda on the fence with them. I've had much better luck with the E-tips. But it was only testing. Haven't killed any animals yet so I'm not going to say they don't work.
Hammers Kill.....Period!

I'm the biggest fan. I have a Cooper Jackson Game rifle chambered in that fine cartridge. I run a 115 Nosler BT on 51 grains on IMR 4831 (deer) and a 90 grain Sierra Blitzking over 54.5 grains of RL-19 for vermin.

The Cooper is too much of a tank to carry around but it shoots great, so I use it a lot prone for groundhogs and deer off a Harris Bipod. I got a big 'ol honkin' VX-3 on it (30 mm 6x20) with a 10 MOA Ken Farrel rail.

So now, I need a light .25-06. I'm thinking about a Finnlight but then there's that Sherman thing going on in our community and it might be worth a look with those 131 blackjacks!

Cheers!

I think the 25-06 would propel those blackjacks plenty fast but you have to track down a 1:7 twist barrel. Then, the world is your oyster! I I have a 257 Robert long action I'm thinking of tearing apart. Only problem is 257 Roberts probably doesn't have enough juice to spit out a 131 much over 2700 fps. I'm still gathering info.

Tagging in. Big fan of the .25-06 as it has the best killing power to recoil ratio i can think of, making it enjoyable to shoot but very effective all the way up to [and including] elk. Ruger M77 w/tang safety & 24" barrel is a sentimental favorite to shoot the baby-aught-six from.

Killed my first Deer with an old Rem 700 in a 25-06, with equally as old VX3 6.5-20x40 AO shooting 115 coreloks Killed several more with it and the amount of deer my father killed with it is countless over the years he hunted with it, I shot a 257 Weatherby Mag for some time and absolutely loved it shooting 110 accubonds, my wife shoots a 25-06 in a Sako and we shoot 100gr Barns Vortex out of it! For anything smaller then Elk(not saying it won't) I wouldn't hesitate to grab one of them out of the cabinet!!!! But I am very partial of the 257roy!!! The 1/4 bores are one of my favorite pills to shoot!

I've had 3, funny thing, my first ever purchase of one (in 1988) is still my most accurate and is on it's original barrel.
All others have moved on, this one is a blued/wood Ruger M77 MKII. 3/8MoA is a regular thing with both 110gr AB's or 115gr Partitions.

I reckon I will always have at least one, and when the barrel on the Ruger is toast, I will re-barrel.

Cheers.

The 25-06 is the most over looked deer and antelope caliber on the planet , period . A friend on mine introduced me to this caliber years ago . I now have a Winchester model 70 sporter in the 25-06

I was at one time, but not anymore. It really has nothing to do with the cartridge though. My first custom rifle I had built was a .25-06, and that is what has soured me to the cartridge.

I made a lot of mistakes with that build. First and biggest mistake was paying too much up front to the Smith, and relying on him to order my parts. Secondly I chose the wrong stock for my project, and that dictated the barrel contour. So I wound up with a heavier rifle than I'd have liked that took way too long to build.

So in the end I have a rifle I don't like in a cartridge I really wanted to like. The rifle shoots well, and I've killed a couple animals with it. However, it pretty much just sits in the back of the safe never to be used again. I've moved on from the cartridge as well, and it doesn't interest me anymore.

Ducky sounds like you just was not happy with the build but it's still a great caliber. Maybe you could sell that one and try to build you a 25-06 more to your taste . Merry Christmas to you and your family

I have always felt that the 25-06 is they adjustable wrench of calibers, with 70gr Blitz Kings or 75gr Vmax's or Speers it is an good choice for varmints. And with 115 gr plus pills it will take out almost any thing you could come across, only to be out done by they AI version which will send an 87gr Vmax to over 4000 FPS. Imagine the fun or damage depending on how you look at it, you could do with that.

I just picked one up myself, well I helped my son buy his first rifle. Cabela's is having a hell of a buy, or at least did, on the long range model Remington 700. I think it was $575 with the mail in rebate. I'll drop a new trigger in it and see how it does. As mentioned, the knock down to recoil ratio has me super excited to go down this road.
My daughter has shot the 25 wssm for 3 years and it's marginal. I went with a lightweight setup on that, great to carry, not great to shoot, for a kid at least. Hoping the added weight of this gun makes it a peach to shoot for the kiddos.

First time I seen a 25-06, a guy was hunting turkeys at about 400yds, I had to have one, so I had a custom one made on a Interarms Mark X action with a 24" Shilen barrel. I had it for over 20 years, reloaded 120gr Remington core-lokts and killed a ton of deer with it. The longest shot was a little over 300yds. Remington stopped selling the core-lokts so I switch to Hornady 120 gr hollow points, that gun would shoot dime size groups all day long. I still have a lot of load data if anybody is interested.
