Anyone have any luck w/Rem. 700- LR rifles ?

Hi, I had a 30-06 Marlin that I had hunted with for a few years and after I retired I thought I would begin reloading and having fun. Two years ago I joined a range where I could shoot out to 500 yds and learned that, to my surprise, I could shoot better than my rifle. I am 71 and the weight of the rifle seems heaver than the equivalent weight M14 did when I was 19. I have to do a little weight lifting to insure that I can handle the weapon. Is it accurate? At the range, when I do my part, I hit steel at 500 yds and I intend to extend that range. Last year in the field I took a doe at 215 yds with a perfect behind the shoulder shot at point of aim from a rest, a six point buck at 50 yds offhand with the same shoulder shot, and a very hurried frontal shot at an eight point buck at less than twenty feet that entered just below his sternum as he charged uphill toward me. My point is that the rifle is both accurate and manageable.you could do a lot worse than the M700 LR.

If you had to pay for all the mods that were done, how much do you think you would have invested to get it shoot as good as it does? Just curious...

I want to get nephew into long range shooting, and was thinking of picking one up in 7RM, but don't know of anyone who owns/shoots one of these. Afraid of buying one, and it shooting lousy. Just seem so cheap, "price-wise". Just wanted something decent to surprise nephew for his b'day coming up.

Purchased one in 2015, for approx $700. Very good shooter. Have developed a couple of hand-loads allowing the gun to hide 5 shots under a quarter at 100yds all day long. Assume that you will have to swap out the trigger. (+$100.00) You might want to consider the Savage 110 long range hunter, as a better alternative. I have one in 7mm Rem Mag. It is a Great shooter! With hand loads it can hide 5 shots under a dime.

I have a long range stainless 5R 26". 300 win mag. Put a timney calvin elite in it and threaded the barrel for a JP eliminator. It is awesome. Like shooting a varmint rifle for elephants!

I won't make any friends from Remington but I wouldn't buy one. About 2 years ago I was teaching an RSO course and one of the 'students' told us about a rifle he ordered from Remington the previous year that arrived with an unfinished chamber--it wouldn't chamber the rounds indicated on the barrel. I've also heard some horror stories about Marlins which are now made by Remington, so I'm just gun shy there.

Trigger Tech Diamond trigger cost some bucks but to me, it is worth it. I did an upgrade from a Trigger Tech (AR) and there is a difference in the feel. The cost $256.00, a standard Trigger Tech trigger under $200.00 some places.

Just be aware that if there is a problem, you will more than likely be on your own with it.

Several years ago I purchased 700 25-06 and started on a quest for accuracy but never really succeeded. Of course, glass bedded, 1lb trigger, good 20x scope, good brass prep but just fair accuracy. It was very finicky. A very experienced shooter told me that the cartridge was at a critical size. To big to effectively use a faster powder and to small of an opening for the capacity (overbore) of the case He told me that of the bullets available at the time that would shoot good. One was only one 100 grn and only one 120 grn. He was absolutely correct. I then went to a well known target barrel and no better. If anything accuracy was worse than with the factory barrel which had a very rough throat. In comparing my 25-06 to my 308, which has accuracy with almost any bullet or powder, I learned the meaning of "inherrantly accurate cartridge". Another view on its overbore, the 30-06 (same case) will shoot a 150 grn bullet approximately same velocity that the 25-06 shoots a 120 grn

If you're willing to spend a little more, you can find 700 5Rs for about $1000. They have a 300win model.
 
I have 700 LR in 7RM. I have had no defects with the rifle. I agree with all the others that the stock trigger is terrible . I replaced with Timney. After trigger replacement, the rifle is very accurate.

The rifle is also too heavy for spot and stalk hunting. Mine is close to 11lbs with scope. I spent last season dragging this boat anchor many miles in Utah elk hunting. Never again....I am retiring it to blind hunting only and am in market for a much lighter rifle for elk hunting this season.
 
5 of us bought the 700 LR in 2015. 3 7 rem mags, 1 300 RUM & 1 300 WM.

Mine copper fouled worse then I have ever seen with any other factory rifle ive shot. traded off to a friend that still has a hell of a time with the fouling even after 700 rounds.
brothers 7mm's bolt was out of time causing extraction issues. constantly had 2 in 1 flyer with it, quickly got sold.
friends 7 rem mag had a burr in the chamber needing polished out.
the buddy with the 300 RUM had great luck with his, pushed out over 1100 round with it till it was shot out!
the other buddy had the 300 WM, could never get good accuracy so he had it rebarreled with a proof and never looked back.


that was enough for me!

For the X-Mark Pro Trigger, I had zero luck getting the trigger to hold adjustment. I thought it was just me not following the instructions correctly, but several of my friends have had the same issues. I also see this issue mentioned in forums constantly.

I have not made any mods to the rifle. Other than the stock trigger, I really have zero complains with the rifle other than its weight. I knew the weight of the rifle before I purchased it, so I can't fault the rifle.
