Probably the 8x, but I need a 6.5x20 on my 17 Mach IV.
For larger varmint I tone it down, but still find I need more than 12x at times, the 3-18x44 is used my 6x45, but it doubles as a Varmint/Deer rig 65grn @3300 for ground hogs to yotes, and in the deer woods there are times I need the field of view of the 3x for the 85 grain Sierra Game Kings, in the Mowhawk
Today I've found from past experience that there are to many times there are opportunities that are missed without the Variable. At least with the 8x you still have close or moving shots easier than a 12x, and at 8x even those longer shots at least you get that opportunity out 2 or 3 hundred.
