8mm Thread

I just have a hard time paying what used to be premium brass prices for lower end brass now. Keep hoping supplies come up and prices go down. Wishful thinking

I sure think you should try to pick that rifle up. It is a handy rifle for carrying around. Might be quite a bit of overkill for deer, but new rifles are always fun

They may be, but I'm not spending $100 for 50 projectiles...No way in hell.

Don't know where the "$100 for 50 projectiles" came from ......

The 8mm MTH bullet that I requested from Cutting Edge will be close to what their 225 gr 338 caliber bullet is, the weight, length and bc will obviously be plus or minus from what the 338 shows, but the goal for the bullet is to get as close to that bc as possible and still work in 10 twist barrels that are standard in 8mm rifles ......
a solid hp projectile much longer than 1.8" and 225 gr in .323" diameter would be a very tricky proposition (stability ?) and would require a lot of R&D before release,

a bullet such as the MTH solves all the problems associated with thin jacketed bullets designed for rapid expansion at long range but are iffy up close, sure a guy will preach "shot placement" I subscribe to that notion also, but at the same time I prefer 100% bullet reliabilty = 100% confidence for point at shoulder and smash'em, and said bullet has a profile, bc and reliable expansion for long range shots ........

I'll gladly pay the $68 per box of 50 bullets .......
my 100% success rate on moose for the past 25 years has shown me that confidence in your gear makes the hunt and the shot a success !

It's coming !

Cutting Edge Bullets confirmed that the 225 gr MTH 8mm bullet is now a reality ! Bc has not been esablished yet but is estimated to be around/between .620 -.650

With years of requests to the big bullet manufacturers without any action ,
Dan @ Cutting Edge Bullets took on the project without any hesitation and moved to get the bullet design done and start prototype bullet production !

In late April I will be getting a couple boxes of bullets for testing and to establish a known bc over live fire shooting sessions from 100-500 yards with two chronographs .....

Finally we will have a real long range 8mm bullet that will also double as a close range deep penetrating heavy bullet

Swift bullets responded to my email via a phone call from the chief !
He assured me that the 190 gr 8mm Scirroco bullet is coming but it will not be in 2015, they are busy trying to stay on top of demand for their current line of bullets .

Thank you for the update! That's really great news, and the 8mm finally may reach up to the top of the calibre - hierachy where it belongs. :)

Well....With recent developments in the 8mm bullets, I might see if I can save up the cash to get an 8mm barrel blank, pull apart my 2nd STW, and build an 8mm RemMag. But we'll have to see. I do have enough brass, only things I'd have to buy is a barrel blank, 8mm bullets, and a set of dies.

Whooohooooo!

Can you get any dimensions?

Length?
Boat tail diameter and length?

Just enough for QuickLoad

Fred,

The info Dan emailed me is that it's designed as a true long range MTH "Max" bullet,
bullet length is 1.704"

I will get more details on bullet dimensions in a few days ...

So, is it shaped more like a VLD? Or more like that goofy looking new 7mm 192 bullet? LOL

No offense to CEB, but that 192 is long and rounded and doesn't look very LR friendly. The bearing surface is like 2" long. LOL

The MTH Max are much more VLD shaped. An 8mm 225 won't be that long.

I just got home from out of town work and I'm more exhausted than I can remember so I could be making big mistakes but I get an easy 2900fps from a 24" barrel in my QL model.

Sometime my models are so close it's amazing like 1 fps off from a single shot and staying within 10fps for a 7 shot string with 1 grain steps. Sometimes is predictable as in 100fps high or low for a string. Sometimes ug.......
