7STW worth the trouble??

Alpha:

No, not the neck is too short or even the bullet sits too deep past the neck. It is simply the OAL for best accuracy is too long to fit in the magazine, even in an extended box. The 28N, 300 PRC, and 30N don't have this problem.

If I do another RUM I will make the throat super short.

So, I assume, you can produce side by side data of two identical 7mm RUM rifles, same loads and same bullets showing that seating the bullet out farther is more accurate ?

Alpha: Of course not, but do you seriously think bullet seating depth doesn't matter? I will say this: in the three RUMS that I have now, two shoot best with OALs that exceed the mag length. The one that doesn't has a shorter throat. There is a reason for the popularity of the 300 PRC and similar cases.

Muzzle velocity isn't everything; when I was young I was enamored with it; I loved huge case capacity and lighter bullets. I also used to zero at 300 yards. I no longer do either in my old age.

Ok guys, bought 7STW die set last night, so the deal is done.
My rifle has a mag length of 3.750" so it should be good to go.
We only just got level 2 covid-19 restrictions back, so we can venture out shooting again. Just gotta re-chamber this barrel.

Cheers.

Hi all,
Just bought a Sendero II in 7RM (YUCK) and thinking of rechambering to something else.
7STW, 28 Nosler & 7RUM have all been considered at this point. Barrel life of the other 2 have pushed me closer to the STW, so I would like opinions on what you think about it's versatility over the others.
The barrel I am using on this build is a 29" 4 groove 1:8" twist 264WM. The factory barrel in 7RM is either being rechambered or sent down the road. In the past, my Sendero barrels have been good shooters, so opinions are needed.

Cheers.
I've had good results with senderos. I Know some haven't. I also run a 7mm stw. Its not finicky and shoots really well. It has .219 freebore. The only downside is that you might have to extend your magazine box & cut out depending on what freebore you go with. I think my loaded round ends up about 3.825" long. I did get it to feed well with a Wyatt's center feed mag box. I had to open up the mag cut out on the 700 action a good bit. I don't Know what to tell you on the 28 nosler. I don't own one and there's mixed feedback. I really think I wouldn't have any problems getting one to shoot but I've been tinkering with 7mm for a long time in several cartridges so I feel really comfortable with 7mm cartridges. I'm just wondering if some of the trouble folks are seeing with the 28 nosler is stemmed from trying to run them in a lighter rifle along with maybe first times in running and loading for a larger than standard sized magnum. I wouldn't build one on a Sporter pencil barrel myself.

Why all the love for 120s at 3800? The wind drift of a 120 Cutting Edge 120 at 1200 is almost double a Berger 195 at 3000. The 195 kicks its butt at 800 and 1000 too.

Trajectory is a non-issue at LR but wind is THE ISSUE (with accuracy a prerequisite).

Kind of like shooting 40 grain bullets from a Swift instead of 80 or 90 grain bullets.
Totally dependent on what the user's perspective of "long range" happens to be.... Simpson developed the cartridge to shoot deer with little holdover out to 400 yards. STW with sizzling 120's still fits the bill spectacularly!

I want to shoot heavies with high BC in this barrel, so what do you all recommend apart from Berger's? They are just too difficult to get here in the quantities I require.
I was thinking ABLR, but have zero experience in 7mm and STW velocities.

What say you?

Cheers.

Yes. If you've the patience and decent brass to keep it fed?! Also get another barrel for it, if you plan on shooting it (like it should be.), because it won't last long. The 7STW is the older Top Fuel of 7mm's, that was replaced by new 28 Nosler Top Fuel, with more case options. I just ordered 28 Nosler barrel #2.

I'm still not convinced that the ultimate 7mm is not the RUM.

Of course a 6.5 RUM with 200 gr bullets might even be better.

Back when P.O. got 2600 on the 6.5x55 AI w/200s in a 24" bbl. Hmmmmm ?

I shot USPSA stuff with Layne many years ago, about the time he was working out the STW. Had a 700 built for it and used it for several years on elk, deer, and a trip to Africa for plains game. Shot really well with Nosler Partitions, but eventually it needed a new tube and I went in a different direction. I miss that rifle!

There's a member on here, I think his name is Dave Armstrong. In 2018 he won a three shot 1500 yd cold bore challenge in Vegas with an STW. It was a straight up hunting rifle with 20x fixed super sniper. From my understanding he was shooting against pure match rifles. Just another testimonial for the STW

Rifle is almost ready, have my scope a Zerotech 4.5-27x50 R3, Nightforce 20MoA pinned rail & Nightforce standard duty rings. Action is Rem 700 Sendero blueprinted with PT&G 1/4" pinned recoil lug.
Chamber cleaned up just fine, in fact, the whole action was very good prior to blueprinting it. Only 9/10ths out on the lugs and the front face was only .0015" off centre.

Cheers.

I don't think your .264 WM barrel will work well with the .284 calibers you listed.
