7mm STW Reloading Thread

I was wondering about the Beast..... I'm glad it's in good hands, How far was the shot and what are you shooting in it now
I actually had to dig back through my texts with Mario to get the data HA!

542yds shooting off of my knees and trigger sticks tripod. 150gr Peregrine VRG4 punched through the ribs. Actually hit her a bit further back than I'd intended, probably caught a gust of wind but she never took a step, just spun a half turn and died in her tracks.

I was actually feeling guilty because I spent most of the season shooting the .260's exclusively but I finally broke out The Beast and my favorite .300 Rum to give them a little work as well.

I still have yet to shoot anything with the Model 70 Sharpshooter but I haven't run out of hogs yet and I'm working up some loads right now for the STW's.:) gun)

Your the Man..... glad to know the Beast is still alive and well

Well if nothing else I promise you that it's got a good home where it's very much appreciated.

If I know I'm going to have to really reach out to kill something it's 100% reliable and may be the least finicky rifle I've ever had when it comes to loading or even just shooting factory ammo.

I picked up two old boxes of Winchester Supreme's with 160gr "fail safe" bullets and it shot them well enough to stack up two consecutive kills at 740yds. I was shooting into a 20 plus mph direct headwind, dropped a buck looking straight at me with a shot right above the sternum and 20 seconds later a doe came over to see why he fell down and dropped her with an almost identical shot. She had her head way up though and it went straight into her spine.

I was shooting off of the same Trigger Sticks Tripod but had my back up against a tree and my shoulder leaned into it so getting steady was no problem. I wouldn't have attempted that with any of my lighter guns.... . HA!:D

That was a couple of years ago when I was still recovering from surgery that had sidelined me nearly all season so having something so reliable really meant a lot.

Glad your enjoying it

Butter bean, wild rose, is this the Montana action 7mm STW by Chris Matthews of long shot rifles??

Yes it is .... how have you been Bud?

I've been well. Deployed a couple more times since the last time we spoke, and now I'm at fort Bragg, NC. I'm glad that rifle is in good hands. It was too much gun for me. I'm finally satisfied with my current arsenal of .223s, .243, .260s, and .308s. I won't be trading or selling for while, but I'll always be buying:D

How are you? How's indiana?

Yes it is and without a doubt it's one of the smartest buys I've ever made. If Beans had not just been a hell of a nice guy and let me have it at a steal I'd have really missed out on a great rifle.

After buying 2, 260's this year myself I can understand your feelings. If I could own only one rifle it would probably be a .260. I could have never said that without being lucky enough to get turned onto the Peregrine bullets but there's nothing in N. America other than a big Grizz/Brown Bear that I wouldn't be confident in shooting with the .260 loaded with the Peregrines after seeing how well they performed in the big wild boar I shot a few weeks ago. Even at 300 plus yards I got over 18" of penetration through the thickest part of the neck, spine, and shoulder on him and as well as they shoot for me I'm more than confident in being able to put them where they need to be.

Have you tried the Peregrine bullets in any other calibers?? Mainly the STW? Just curious. I wouldn't mind trying these, but they don't have load data for my 300 WSM, & STW or 6.5-284 Norma. Are you loading the PlainsMaster bullet in your 260?

Yep and they've done a great job for me this year. What the Peregrine guys recommended to me was to use load data for the Barnes TSX and LRX or even lead core bullets in similar weights.

I will tell you this, you can push them much faster than the available load data without running into pressure trouble due to the minimal bearing surface because of the dive bands and shape.

I've got about fifty or so loaded up right now with RL19, 23, 26, and H1000 to experiment with as soon as it dries up enough for me to get to the range.

In the .300wm, STW, and .300Rum I've been using data for other 165's for the 180's with great results and zero pressure problems.

As always use your best judgement and start with reduced loads and work up and you should be fine.
