Here's my experience today.


I was breaking in a 6.5x55 I had cut to 24" and recrowned, trigger etc. The neck is really tight and it won't accomodate ammunition that is too long. Well, I was shooting some cheap stuff (15 shots down the tube, same ammo) and loaded a round and couldn't get the bolt closed on number 16. I'm nervous about this gun a little, really. I had to tap the bolt out and it pulled the case out but left the bullet in the gun. It happened so fast and powder went everywhere! Then I realized I should check the gun as I couldn't find the bullet? I borrowed a ram road and discovered it was still in the gun, and it was pretty stuck!? I decided not to shoot anymore until I clean it and tell the story. ***...... Is safety the most important thing or what!

Any thoughts on what happened and opinions about the gun or what to do next? It has a match grade barrel and I am thinking it was cut with a tight throat reamer, but not super deep? Do I need a go/no go guage?

It shoots well.

remington put 40 shots thru it before they sent it back to me. I've put about 45 shot thru it myself. I dbl checked base screws at 30# and rings are at 25#, dry. Action screws are at 65# dry.

I think your torque on your rings are way too tight. I have mine at 15 pounds.

Brother Bob, I am at a loss as far as your targets. The patterning indicates tension, or stress on the barrel. But that is not etched in stone. We know now that it is a light contour barrel. SOMETIMES, light barrels will shoot more accurate with upward tension on the front end of the barrel. Can you add card board shims under the end of the barrel? Use business cards, they work well. Adda few until you know you have about 7-8 lbs. Upward tension. Try that, that way you can rule that out. Your POI will change if you do this. Just be aware.

Can a 7mm rem mag be rechambered to 7STW, for example a sendero if it hasn't been shot much?

Well I went to the rifle range yesterday to see how my two Senderos would do. I remounted the scope in the first Sendero (I got this from Montana) because I moved the vortex bubble level from inside the rings to outside the rings so I had to sight in both of them. I took my Zero Point Magnetic Illuminated Boresighter with me to help. I set-up the chrony on the tripod and was shooting at the 50 yard target first. I took two shots with the new Sendero (the one from California-I bought it on tis website "Mint condition") and put the Zero Point Magnetic Illuminated Boresighter on the end of the barrel to help the reticles to line it up) You could hardly see it through the scope because it was very sunny. Well I got too much in a hurry because I forgot to remove theZero Point Magnetic Illuminated Boresighter from the end of the barrel and took another shot. Well after the shot I knew immediately screwed up because the Zero Point Magnetic Illuminated Boresighter was disintegrated and the bullet hit my chrono and destroyed the front sensor. Well I was really mad at myself but I thought "what the hell" I am here so I kept on shooting and sighted the Senderos. I have already talked to Shooting Chrony and I will send the Chrony back to the them next week to get it repaired. I will not replace the Zero Point Magnetic Illuminated Boresighter because I did not like it very well anyways.

I would HIGHLY NOT recommend anybody getting Zero Point Magnetic Illuminated Boresighter!

I finally got both sighted in at 100 yards and had 4 bullets left for each of the Senderos to see what groupings I was getting.

The first target picture is the "Montana Sendero" with four 140 Accubond, 82 grain H1000, COL 3.675 and that is the result of the 4 shot group.

The second target is with the "California Mint Sendero" with four 162 AMAX, 76 grain H1000, COL 3.675 and that was the result of the 4 shot group. The wind was gusting pretty good (10-15 mph) from my left side to my right side when I shot this grouping so I think it affected this grouping.

Since the Chrony was damaged I could not get any readings for velocity but I am pretty pleased with both groupings and rifles.

I am going to take them up to a gunsmith close to York, Pennsylvania in a couple of weeks to have jewell triggers on both and have the Montana Sendero skim bedded. The California "Mint" Sendero already has been skim bedded and action blueprinted.

WapitBob< I agree wit 7Stw on putting some tension on the barrel and if it was me I would pull your charge weight back some along with some barrel tension to calm the harmonics down just a bit,Hang in there it will come to ya I believe

If that doesn't work, go to David Tubb's website and buy his Final Finish product. It will smooth out the bore and improve your accuracy. Next step, bedding or truing. What was Remington's experience?

I mini pillar bedded the action in the Greybull stock when I first got the rifle.

Thanks for the pressure suggestion. I guess Remington put that pressure point on their plastic stocks for a reason.

Absolutely, that is the cheapest way to go and may end up with a shooter after all.
