7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

Hi all,

I am doing a build with on of Remington 7mm mag but getting it re-chambered to a 7mm STW (which is a something i have wanted for a long time). My question about this is would a standard 7mm rem mag magazine hold and feed the 7mm STW ammo?

Welcome to the Brotherhood.

A Remington 700 long action is a Remington 700 long action. They are all the same length receiver, bolt, and magazine. So in short, yes, your action will work just fine, since that is what the factory STW's were built using. The only exception is if you reload, and you use long heavy high-BC bullets and want to get them near the rifling, that can be a problem. The STW tends to be a bit too long, and you will need to either shoot it as a single-shot (which is what I do), or have a Wyatt's extended magazine box and follower installed, which any competent gunsmith should be able to do.

Thank you MudRunner2005. I knew the action and everything would be ok but didnt know about the magazine and feeding. I know there are conversion kits that can chamge change the bdl to a detachable mag. I have some for 7mm rem mag but wasnt for sure about how well they would function. Worse comes to worse they have them for the ultra mags which i believe the STW would fall under for their fitting.

The Wyatt's I am talking about are not detachable mags, they are standard floor plate magazine boxes and followers just like your current BDL mag and follower, they are just longer, and you will have to have a gunsmith open (mill-out) the front of the receiver and stock to accommodate the longer mag box and follower. So it will still look 100% original from the outside, but inside it has a longer internal mag length for the longer cartridges.

Also, the RUM cartridges are larger in diameter than the STW cases, and can sometimes cause feeding issues. Not always, but that can be a possibility, and I have no experience with the RUM detachable magazines. One of my STW's is built on an old Rem 700 CDL 7RUM action and I used the factory CDL 7RUM mag box and follower, and everything seems fine on it. Also, I'm not saying it will be an issue, just letting you know that it can be a potential issue.

I would think you are going to be fine. Is this a BDL or one of the custom shop models that has the factory detachable mag?

Wildrose, it is a bdl. Brownells has those conversion kits for detachable mags though that i may do. But if I dont I wanted to know that the standard stuff.

I don't believe you'll have any problem. If I remember right the mag box is the same on all of their long actions.

I ran into an issue with a long action that was rebarreled for 300 RUM in that I had to open the rails a bit to allow for the much fatter cartridge be even that was easily managed with my dremel and a cutoff wheel.

I don't think there's enough difference in the diameter of the 7RM and STW case body for you to even have to do that.

If you can take an STW round and drop in through from the top you'll have your answer.

7mm STW or 28 Nosler

I'd like to hear from some folks familiar with both cartridges. I've got a Win M70 7mm RM in a B&C Medalist stock. I'd like to re-barrel, and am thinking of going to either the STW or Nosler in the process.

What say you, 7mm gear-heads?? Ballistics, gunsmithing, other issues??

gun)

thanks,
StanB

I have an STW but not a nosler so I will only give the one thought. That is; for a 28nosler there is exactly one source of brass. The STW mostly requires fire forming but suitable brass can be had from many manufacturers.

From time to time there are shortages on STW brass and the good thing is that you can easily form it from 8mm RM brass but I've never had to.

There's a good assortment of high quality factory ammo for the STW and from shooting it alone I've put together a lifetime supply of brass.

With Nosler backing their own proprietary cartridge odds are there will always be a good supply of it available through them but IF the cartridge doesn't take off it'll likely get very expensive in the future.

None of us can see the future but IF I were starting over looking for a high performance 7mm cartridge I might lean towards the Nosler for now but I certainly won't be switching to it.

The only way I'd do so is if it flat became impossible to buy either 7mm STW brass or loaded factory ammo.

Howdy all. This is my first post here on this thread as well as this board. I have been shooting STW since I started bug game hunting 15 years ago. My rifle is a Ruger No. 1 with a muzzle broke heavy profile Douglas Premium barrel and a Leupold VX III 3-9x50. It shoots 160 grain Nosler Accubonds. Been the most reliable, accurate, and fun rifles I've ever shot.

An expert by no means, but i have one of each and love both. The nosler was an impulse by at a sports show and the STW a custom made 700 w/Kreiger 28" tube that i shoot suppressed.I have killed elk and deer at extreme distance with both, they are both easy to load for and equally accurate.the choice to pack on long hunts is the nosler due to the weight. They cost about the same to shoot. The STW will reach out with least amount of moa with same bullet loaded in both and is easier to pick up speed with, this forum has some of the most knowledgeable people on it and some have given great help and advice on both. I say read before you buy then make your choice based on what you like.

I have a STW built by a gunsmith from Georgia. He built it for me about 5 years ago. Its on a 700 action with a shilen #4 contour barrel. He trued the action. I already had purchased a stock from MPI and installed a jewel trigger. Thus far with H4831 with 140 accubonds to 3/4" sometimes a little better to 3440 fps but settled on h1000 with 160 accubonds and 168 bergers. Accubonds are at 3212 and averagfe .75 to .5 at 100 yards same with bergers. Love this gun. It was topped with a 4-12 swaro but switched to the Leupold CDS. Will have to post some pics later. Thanks for starting this thread..

Do you mind sharing your load date for both the 168 Berger VLDs and the 168 Accubond LR

Remington 78 action trued, 1 in 9 twist 28" 5R bartlein barrel before the brake, Lil bastard muzzle brake, GRS decima hunter adjustable stock, ptg bottom metal obendorf style, timney calvin elite 2 stage trigger set at 8 oz., 20 moa weaver rail vortex viper pst 6.5x20x50, sako style extractor, tactical bolt knob built from my gunsmith, blue titanium cerakote...
