7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

The majority of my hunting is mule deer and elk. I need the heavier grain bullet. I am more than willing to try other bullets. That is why i am on this sight, you guys have alot of knowledge and experience with this rifle!
Barnes has a 175 gr in the TSX and and for Elk you can never go wrong with 175 Nosler Partition some guns dont like the Partition but if you can get them to shoot out of your rig thats a no brainer for elk .......I shot a cow with a 160 Partition and she she never took a step .....

What bullets do you shoot for hunting?

USMC91, at least at this point, and for what and where I hunt, I have settled on the Barnes 145 LRX. It has the mass, and is nearly the size of a 160 class bullet. That being said, as with any monolithic bullet, you can actually go a step down, and still have enough bullet. I know of folks that have taken elk with a 270, and 30-06. So, ( and I can feel the frowns already,), but I wouldn't feel under classed using this bullet on elk. I chatted with a guy on here a while back, who did just that, and that bullet did it's job, and dumped a HUGE elk with this same bullet. There may be better choices, and I get that, but I guess what I'm saying is that I would not discount it as a possibility if I were to fortunate enough to go elk hunting.
I also have a love affair with a Nosler partition. Smoke one with a 160 partition, and you will have a elk to clean. The 175 Partition is a timeless 7mm favorite, and also will do well, as expected. Sometimes, they CAN be a little difficult to get to shoot consistently, and point on accuracy, but if you can get them to fly right, your search is over! One of my STW's loves the 140 partition. My #1 sendero likes the 160 moly coated bullet quite well. Take care, and enjoy your search!

Maybe I'll take the customs and use them for my break in when I finally get my gun..... If that ever happens!!!! Dang smith ****ed me off Saturday. Went to bring my reamer to him at his shop, it was closed inside of his "normal" business hours. So I texted him and not reply.... Anyone want to convert a Win model 70 to an STW. Got a brand new Brux Barrel, new stock. I have the reamer.... hahahhaah I am just not impressed....
But, that being said, I do need to break the barrel in so those may work, or I'll load my own...

Hearing your surprise with the accuracy, makes me want my gun faster!!!!! hahahaah keep shooting!!!!

Well you know where you could have sent it....just saying lol.

I know Ben!!!!! Believe me I am regretting it now. Gonna go out there and pick my stuff upand send it. I want a local guy but work ethic in Vegas SUCKS!!!!! I can not believe how poor ethics grow here. I guess I was raised to do as I say and I look at business as a reputation. Not just making money!!!
Anyway, can you guide me on how to get this thing to you??
Thanks Ben

All that needs to happen is get everything in a box and ship it to us at the address listed in my signature. Do you want me to us your reamer or mine? You can ship it USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc...whatever you want. I have STW ammo to use to test fire so no ammo needed. If you want me to shoot groups with it before it leaves I can either mount one of my scopes and shoot it or you can send yours. I'm starting a batch of custom builds tomorrow as I just received a barrel shipment today (9 barrels). If all goes well, I'll have my personal gun barreled by Wednesday this week.
Also, our website is back up and running if you want to check out some of our rifles and custom builds

7stw, thanks for the input, i have shot several elk with my browning 270 with nosler partitions, and they worked very well. I quess i am stuck on thinking i need a heavier bullet, but i think it may all be in my head. I dont disagree with anything you said, and it is very much appreciated.

Bump....

Oh, and the STW loves the 180 Berger VLD's with 75.5gr of H1000 backing it, set out at 3.858" COL.

My Remington 700 Sendero SF 7mm STW has a magazine that will only allow a maximum COL of 3.680".

With the load you quoted above having a COL of 3.858" are you loading them as a single shot or do you have a modified magazine on your Remington Sendero SF 7mm STW?

Thanks!

Single-shot. Yeah, I'm sure I'll have to shorten them a good bit to make them fit in the mag. Unfortunately I only shoot my STW at the range, after my 120 yard encounter with a whitetail around the 115lb mark....It didn't turn out real well for it, or I......It got mangled up, and I lost alot of meat. LOL After that, she became a safe and range queen, as I doubt I will ever be able to go Elk hunting since those hunts cost a good bit.

I dropped down to a 7Mag, and hunting has been alot smoother sailing since. Nowhere near as much meat ruined since it came along. And the .257 Wby does the job just as good with virtually 0 meat ruined. My processor was almost in shock at the vitals compared to the entrance & exit.

However, if I had the opportunity to take some whities beyond 500, I wouldn't heitate to sling a 180 VLD down range out of the STW.

Mudrunner

Wyatt extended boxes are what you are looking for. I believe Midway has them and others. I could not get Wyatt's website to open, but you can google them.

I need to measure my Ruger, i am interested in how deep that is for seating the bullets. Since it is a single shot, I can set them out there complared to the Winchester.

Wyatt's is the way to go. My Wyatt's allows for a 3.925 over all length and I can fit 4+1 in my Mod 70.
Also I was spinning up my barrel tonight when disaster struck, **** tool head broke and took out my threads when I was making my finial zero pass, I just lost an inch off my barrel. I guess at least it didn't happen on a customer's barrel. **** tools!!
