7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

For some reason the email on my phone is jacked up and it wont send all the pictures the way I need them to. Anyway here's a shot of the rifle in it's original configuration. It's a 1974 Winchester Mod 70 Ranger in 270 Win. It's an ADL style which ultimately worked out better for this application with fitting the action for the longer Wyatts box and the PTG bottom metal.
The other picture is a quick shot I grabbed while I was thinking about it when I started the process of opening the bolt face up from a 30-06 bolt face to a magnum bolt face. The offset boring bar on the mill was only the rough cut process, it was finished, faced, and trued with the PTG Magnum bolt face cutter in a jig I built that does the bolt while in locked battery in the action. I have pictures of that too once my phones stops being dumb.

I have shot some with H1000, today i shot a pretty good group with 75 gr H1000. I am going to keep workin it and see what happens. I have also been using IMR7828ssc, and i am having good luck with it as well at around 69 grains.

I have had really good results with H-1000 and it is really stable and cosistant with temp changes

Thats a really nice offset cutter you have .......Me like ......I would Love to see the rig you have for finish cutting

I have had good results too with H-1000 and my reloads with mine and my Pop's 7mm STWs.

So far i have had the best luck with the imr 7828, but i think i am getting close i think!

Ben, that gun you are working with right now looks like the rifle I started with when I started building my Custom 280. Mine was a M670, in 30-06. But it don't look like it now, I'll tell you that. I forget which years they made the 670, actually, it is a 670A, which has the three position safety, which is better anyway. Gotta love the Winchester actions! I have gotten to really like them. I like them for the one piece receiver/ recoil lug. That has got to be a advantage when coupling barrel to it!

Well after many months I finally started building my personal STW at the shop. I have some pictures of the process but unsure if I should start a new post of the build or just post them all here. Thoughts?

Anyway, I got the barreled action broke down, milled the receiver to accept the Wyatts box, fitted the PTG one piece bottom metal, opened the bolt face from 30-06 to Magnum, trued the action, trued the raceways, trued the lugs, trued the bolt face to the action, polished and lapped the raceways, lapped the lugs and fitted the raceways to the mag box to allow for smooth feeding. Now I'm ready to thread the barrel and cut the chamber. I'm having a custom stock (one off, not produced for the Win Mod 70 normally) made up at HS Precision from a buddy I know that works there and it should be in my hands next week and I should be able to get this thing out and shoot it within 2 weeks. Then tear it back down and send it off to get fluted, then I'll DuraCoat it when it gets back from twisted barrels.

Ben, sounds like you have been busy! And it also sounds like you are building a tack driver too!
PS, I like your workshop, nice toys!!

USMC91, first of all, Welcome to " The Brotherhood"! I think you will find the H1000 to be very forgiving, and very stable too. It seems as though you don't get high pressure spikes as much with the H1000. What bullet are you shooting, and how long are you expected shots?
I'm glad to hear that your gun shoots well. Some of those rifles were a little rough around the edges when they first came out, and it seems like they usd a chisel plow to cut the riflings into the barrels. Obviously, yours wasn't one of them! Sounds like you got a good one! Just don't let her get to hot, and three shot, or maybe a series of TWO shot groups are fine. Take care, and good luck!

Wow, you are probably going to have a tack-driver with all of your work you are doing on your new 7mm STW build.

Really nice workshop/machinery set-up for your gunsmithing!

7stw - I picked up a Krieger 1:9 5r standard Palma Contour #15, 31.25" blank for a finish length of 30" first. I'm going to start there and see what kind of velocities I can get with the berger 168's. I've pretty much based the build around the 168 berger, I'll play around with other's but the performance I'm looking for the 168 fits the bill. If there's not a lot of benefit to the 30" then I'll cut it back to a more manageable length as this is going to be a field gun.

I really prefer to build on the Mod 70 action as well, even if the aftermarket doesn't support the Mod 70 as much as the 700. The 3 position safety allows for a shorter sear engagement and lighter trigger "safer" than you can with a 700 in my opinion. I'm running a Timney I've gone through and it's pulling 6oz right now with zero take up, but I'll probably bump it back up to 1.2-1.4lbs. Plus the machine work is faster and easier than the 700, no bolt recess to machine into the barrel or recoil lug to get aligned up (and change out to a better one) plus the biggest point is the extractor design on the Winchester is 100% better than the 700 in my opinion.

This rifle is going to make a drastic change in appearance as well. It's going to be a cross over between a tactical precision gun and a field hunting gun. The bolt handle is changing to a precision armament handle, and one of their radial brakes as well. I'm still debating on fluting the bolt or not and what design on the barrel flutes I want to run.

Here are a few pressure graphs from my old sendero 7stw( 26" factory bbl.)... I had a strain guage in her for a spell.
The first and second graphs are the 140 sierra pro hunter with 81 rl25 and a 215 lighting the fire.
The third is 78 I 7828 with the same 140 sierra and a 215.
The final graph is the Win factory 150 grain load that was available in the mid 2000's.
The average vel. for rl25 was 3350 fps; the average vel. for 7828 was 3375 fps.
Notice that by 2.5 millisecond the pressure is already down to 10 KPSI or so; longer than 26-28" bbl.s for this cal. are a ? in my opinion.

Hey Lefty, wow, those charts re amazing! Am I reading 72,000 kpsi on that fourth chart? And that is with the Winchester factory ammo too, right? That chart does make you wonder about the need for a longer or shorter barrel huh?
How do you go about getting a strain gage, and what do you plug it into to read it? That stuff seems interesting to me! Thanks for the post!
