7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

Update: I did a chamber casting tonight and I can see traces of the lands the whole way back to the casing on three of them.

Chamber and throat is clean.

I think I found my problem.

It sounds like to me that Mickey Mouse did the chambering job when you got it. That certainly sucks, but all is NOT lost. You probably can have it " set back" a half inch, and have someone Reputable rechamber, and use a new finish reamer, and you will be all set. It puzzles me as why it was as accurate as it was in the beginning. With the round count being as low as it is, I don't feel as though the remainder of the barrel is hurt. Assuming you had a 26 inch barrel , you still will have enough remaining to get good velocity. What a shame though, a obermeier barrel to boot. It's definitely worth the repair attempt. A friend of mine had a 300 win mag " set back", and it is way more accurate then what it ever was was. Velocity loss was negligible.
Just make sure the NEW smith uses new reamers, and minimal free bore.
Hope everything works out for you. It's amazing what the chamber cast can tell you.

I think it was accurate as the tracings in the throat were probably high enough to actually take some bite and act like an extended leade. They aren't full lands, but I can see the one edge of each land run back to where the case neck would max out.

It solves another mystery as early in the round count I'd have a couple shots that showed some pressure signs at the base and this confounded me as I was 4 grains under max. Basically, I had no freebore.

As the throat wore in, the bullets (probably) were no longer were able to gain any purchase and they bounced over that bumpy throat until they hit the leade. At that point they probably had some weird harmonics or were scratched up.

That's my best guess.

You know, I was just thinking, that you MAY be able to have a GOOD smith run a NEW finish reamer through it, and clean it up. That will achieve the proper free bore, and to correct whatever else was not to SAAMI spec when it was butchered the first time. A competent smith could advise you better, really depending on what condition the rear half of the chamber is in. If that works, you won't have to do a thread recut, and rechamber. Either way, it is completely fixable, and you will have a great rifle afterwards.

I think I said that about 5 posts ago.......wasnt finished reamed.......looks like your high dollar tube got cut by a blacksmith instead of a gunsmith

I am in the market for a new scope for the Sharpshooter that I bought from Butterbean. i am looking to spend about $500-600 dollars on it. The gun currently has 1" high rings on it. Most of the scopes that I am looking at are 1" scopes, with a max range of 16x.

These are what I am looking at currently:
1) Nikon Monarch 4-16x 42mm with BDC
2) Minox ZA-5 3-15x 42mm with BDC
3) Vortex Viper HS 4-16x 44mm with BDC (will need new rings, 30mm tube)
4) Bushnell Elite 4-16x 40mm 600 DOA
5) Weaver Classic Extreme 4-16x 50mm, either German #4 or Dual X (30mm tube)
6) Leupold VX3 4.5-14x, not sure of reticle yet.

I currently have a Bushnell 4200 on my Ruger #1 7mm stw, and it has held up well. I also have Nikon and Leupold on other rifles. And a Nikon on my 12 ga. slug gun.

Just looking for some opinions of what others think of my list.

Thanks

I love my vortex scopes and I would highly recommend the Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 with BDC.

Also, if you can still find them I would recommend the "Vortex Viper HS Tactical Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 5-15x 44mm Side Focus" scope that Vortex made for MidwayUSA. I do not have any personal experience with this scope but they were highly regarded on SniperHides Forum:

Butterbean, you hit the hammer right on the nail. I did see the marks, but when he dais it was accurate before this, that threw me off. I love the " Blacksmith" comment, and SO appropriate. Please let me know who did that so I NEVER have anything of mine chambered there.
I think he went to Walt Disney World of Technology. Good pick there Brother Bean!!

I've seen before.......just a shame to see a tube like that run over with a bottom plow

Well I have 5 elite series scopes and all are great, so I'll vote there.
I've got three Nikon, a monarch 3-9, buckmaster 6-18, and a 6x monarch residing on a 375 H@H simply because I want recoil to kill the scope because I hate it. The **** trouble is it just keeps going. Not like I hate fixed X; two of my elite are 10x fixed. So IMO nikon is a ? mark. I don't have enough experience with the others to comment.

I have 2 Weaver Extreme Classics with the German #4 and I think the glass is better than my Leupold vx-3's. They were originally as expensive and couldn't be sold by Weaver at the price and sat around, now they are being offered at Natchez for 1/2 or less than original and they are tough and have a full lifetime warranty. They are illuminated too. Awesome.

Thanks for all of the responses on the scopes. Still not sure what one I am going with.

Ya, I saw the price of the Weaver at Natchez, that is why I am looking at the particular one.

Hopefully I will have the rifle by Friday and I can pick it up. While there, I will look at what they have, as the dealer has a lot of different scopes. I will make sure that I stay away from the Nightforce ones though!!!!

I also have a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 on my AR, and I like it for that.
