7mm STW Brotherhood - For those who shoot the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner

Hey 7 look close at that pic again those are land markings.....it has me confused a bit
He's either got crap/build-up in the free-bore or a burned throat.

burned throat at 200 rounds +- = soft steel

To get a barrel to do that you nearly have to have a burned throat. Crap in the free-bore will likely rub arbitrarily. I didn't notice the land marks either; looks like my savage 243's bullets before I got rid of it. To much prarie rat dusting had chewed up the throat. I could shove the bullets in WAY past where I could when the gun was new and it was either re-barrel or remove from collection.

I can't close the bolt beyond 3.92 OAL with the Accubonds, but that's not as long as I'd expect to see with a toasted throat. I've shot some barrels out.

I'm leaning toward maybe a worn reamer, but I can't confirm it. I can't see why fouling wouldn't build up everywhere and not just before the lands.

The barrel is an Obermeyer so I wager she's not soft.

I understand you have a good tube ....but Ive seen it before .....I have had Tubes last a thousand rounds and i have had several high dollar tubes that didnt make it past three hundred......regardless those are land markings so my guess is its soft, reamed off center, wasnt finshed reamed or its toast

I was going to suggest that rather than throwing out the barrel, (the reamer being suspect especially if it was an early reamer that rechambered alot of 7rem mags to 7stw) I'd set back the barrel and re-cut the chamber, this would clean up the marks, which I am leaning toward being tooling marks as they go all around and are the same for every rifling. You'll loose about an inch, but should be feesable. or re throast the exhisting chamber, both can be done quite easily, but I'm thinking that the reamer is worn.

Guys, just checking in to see whether anyone has tried 168gr Barnes LRX's in a Sako 1:9.5 twist barrel? Just wondering if they will stabilize.

Here is something off topic but I find the guys on this forum extremely knowledgeable... In addition to the 7stw I also shoot a .243 win (among others) and I am planning on trying out the Hornady 105 gr A-Max. Was thinking of trying H4350, H1000 and Retumbo powders. I like to work with temp stable powders and I have read some good things about all three with this bullet. Can anyone give me some advice on this? I also was wondering if my 1/10 twist will stabilize this bullet. A friend who shoots it recommended it and he he thinks it will be OK.

The 10 twist will be fine .....I havent used those powders in that Cal or that Bullet...... H 414 and the Barnes 100grTsx is what works for me in my A/I but check with Dano1 he is really sharp on the 243 and helped me a bunch with mine

Lee,

Thanks for your compliment!

Bobs, A friend of mine and I did a test using 105g Bergers and retumbo and found that it was a good powder for the .243 Win with one exception, There isn't enough capacity in the case to justify using this slow of a powder. The same is true of H1000. They both will go bang, but the top velocitys of this caliber are achieved using powders with a burning speed like H4350 and H414. A new powder that seems to be a top choice is Hodgdons Hybrid 100V. It's similar burn rate makes it a top choice. Try your H4350 first.

When choosing a powder for a cartridge, I always try to find one that fills the case to roughly 95% or more. This helps with consistant ignition and a better burn and a smoother pressure curve.

As far as the 1-10"Twist stabilizing the bullet, It very well might. It depends alot on the personality of the gun and barrel. Berger recommends a 1-8" twist. My .243 Win and .243 AIs both have 1-9.25" twist barrels they stabilize 100g bullets just fine, I have been wanting to try 105g Bergers out of me Rem 700 VLS .243 Win for quite some time and I will this next year, So..... I can't be certain if mine will even stabilize them until I shoot them this next year.

Thanks Danno. I will take your advice and try H4350 first. The reason I was interested in H-1000 & Retumbo with the 105 Amax was the Hogdon data shows better velocities (+200fps) for those 2 powders at the same pressure levels, though their max loads are only in the 49,500-50.200 CUP range. However, they do show both as compressed loads. My rifle has a long magazine box and I was hoping to be able to get a little more powder in the case. I was also wondering if you have tried RL 17 in your 243? The hype when it came out was that it got significantly better velocity than the other available powders. I was thinking of trying it with the 80gr TTSX.

Bobs,

I know they have better velocities, as you stated they are compressed. They only time I would consider a compressed (and they are heavily compressed) load would be if you could also crimp the bullet into place. I've had 2 separate compressed loads in diffrent calibers that backed themselves out while traveling down bumpy gravel roads. they wouldn't fit into the rifles any more, so I have a tendency to stay away from them.

Look at the Hybrid as a better option as it too is compressed, but not to the same degree.

I have never used RL-17, I have limited experience with Reloader Powders and have only used RL-22 in a 6.5-06AI.

My powder of choice in my .243s is H414. It may not be the fastest, but has yielded the best accuracy for me.

I like the 100 V have some loaded for the A/I but havent tried them yet ...... but have used it in the 25-06 with 85gr Balliistic Tips and it was awesome

I want to thank you all for your help with my Questions:)

Hey,

Does anyone in the brotherhood have a Weatherby Accumark 7mm STW? I think my buddy "Freebore" has one.

I've got the bug bad for the 7mm STW these days. I think it is an awesome and overall great caliber for game and accuracy. The only other caliber I would consider these days is a 300 Weatherby.

So the reaon I'm asking about a Weatherby Accumark is I may pull a "hat trick" and acquire another 7mm STW to make it three. I'm thinking of trading my Remington 700 LSS .257 Weatherby Magnum for a Weatherby Accumark 7mm STW.

I have never owned a Weatherby or a Weatherby Accumark. How does the Weatherby Accumark compare to my Remington 700 Senderos in accuracy and tight groupings?

Also, does anyone know what the rifle/barrel twist is for the Weatherby Accumark in the 7mm STW caliber?

Thanks!

PS: I'm just trying to keep up with Bob aka "7stw" (I think he has four 7mm STWs). :D
