Well to bring new life to this conversation. 7mm prc saami specs are officially released. From what backfire tv states it looks like it's on the 300 prc case and runs about 2950ish with a 180 gr bullet and keeps at or above 2000 fps at 900 + yards. So it's looking pretty sweet to me for a long action 7mm. And it's not nearly over bore as the 28 Nosler and 7 STW. Btw I really like both those alot as well.

I looks like it's in between the 6.5prc case length and 300prc. So its an "extra medium". I kind hoped it was a 7-300prc. I love how hornady can't make ammo for their current PRC's but decide to drop another. Not knocking the new cartridge but hornady needs to "dance with the one who brought ya". Even before the PLANdemic you never saw much 300prc and even less 6.5prc on the shelves.
Heck you don't see much 147gr 6.5creed and unfortunately thats probably the most popular cartridge on the market today.
I'm sorry but a "new from hornady" cartridge better have a freaking crap ton of factory ammo on the shelves and not just PH and match.

Don't even get me started on the 6arc.

I don't disagree with any of those statements. From what I can tell it looks like the 300 prc case just necked down and shortened some. It looks like it's going to seat long like the other prc cartridges. I personally love the ideal of a 7mm that's not a monster overbore and can out preform the 7mm mag. But ammo and brass will be a nightmare I imagine. Their last 5 cartridges have been a success. I think they limit the market on ammo for these new cartridges just to drive up cost and make massive profits. But that's 100 percent my opinion.

So basically a non-belted 7mm magnum ? Similar to the 300WM/300PRC comparison.

Not the "7-300PRC" or 300PRC necked to 7mm.
It is an XM or LA cartridge, but not a full length LA...if that makes sense? An XXM cartridge?
A specced 180 @ 2950 is not beating the 7RM at anything except MAYBE in anemic factory loads? My 7RM pushes a 180 @ 2996 w. H1000 or a 184 @ 3050 w. RL26. Heck, a 7SAUM or .280AI can push a 180 @ 2900+. My 24" 7SS can push a 184 @ 2912.
Then there is the 7 Max, 7Mega, 7WSM, 7LRM, 7 Blaser Mag, Lazzeroni Firebird and Tomahawk, 7Wby, 28 Nosler, 7 RUM....
I think once handloaders get ahold of this, the performance numbers will increase, and I applaud innovation and new cartridge designs, but this mid-sized case doesn't make me all tingly. As popular as the 28 Nosler is, they would have been better off (in my opinion) of going a bit longer to a true LA case and keeping velocities in the 3050 range. Too many handloaders will match the 7PRC specs with what they already have.

But the "ooh, bright and shiny and new!" crowd should eat it up.

It will be good for factory match ammo shooters that want to buy a factory rifle

Which is hornadys main market with these anyway imo

Kinda boring for handloaders with customs but if you really want to shoot heavies in a 3.34 box I guess it's likely the best off the shelf option

Hornady is making ammo. I have no issue finding 6.5 and 300 prc...or 6creed and 6.5creed.

This 7prc might be pretty sweet.

I won't be running too fast to that cartridge. I get 3000 fps with a 180 in my LA 284 running RL17. Granted it's got a 30" barrel but even my 25" hunting rifle in 284 gets me an honest 2925 with 180s. I understand the have to have newest cartridge mentality. I use it often. Great for those that will jump in on it looking for something new. I've all but replaced the 7mm magnums with the 30 caliber magnum. The newest bullets for the 30's have gotten pretty impressive. Gonna play with them for a while.

It looks very close dimensionally to my 7mm blaser improved. Like my blaser, I'm sure it will be very easy to shoot and will shoot anything you feed it very well. Kinda like the 6.5prc seems to be. My gunsmith said he's yet to have a 6.5 that doesn't shoot factory ammo less than .5 moab. There may be other 7mm that have the same or slightly better speed, but I doubt there are any better balanced powder efficient for speed, light recoiling, or easier to shoot well in a factory setup

It makes sense. I hand load for everything. I don't have a 7mm anymore and once this one gets some options out there, I will most likely give it a try. The 2950 I'm sure is a very conservative base. I'm guessing 3050 will be easy attainable. However I do agree that if you're going LA go all the way or build something in SA that surpasses 7 saum. With that Said I think I'll probably still buy into the hype and get one. I do love my 6.5 prc alot. The 300 prc is good but I'm not overly in love with it.
I will give it to Hornady. Love them or hate them. Those guys know how to advertise and hit the sweet spot in the market for buyers who want a factory rifle.

Yup. 26" 7 rem mag with RL26 and a 180 vld @3060 fps in a couple of 7 mags. H1k has got 2950 or better in every 7 mag with a 24+" tube I have ever loaded for. And that is in federal, hornady, or remington brass which can be found everywhere, and a SAAMI chamber. The only thing this has to offer will likely be decent factory ammo options, if you will ever be able to find it. I suppose that's useful.

Don't really see the point for a handloader, just get a 7 mag and you have ton of data already out there, aren't forced to use Hornady brass, and will have plenty of die options available and in stock. Unless one is bored and has money to burn on a 7 rem mag with a face lift, then more power to ya! Should be fun.
