Hi All,

I have a Bergara Wilderness Ridge in 300 Win that I've been planning to have rebarreled to 7mm PRC this spring. I'm somewhat local to Preferred Barrels down here in southern UT, so I'm going to use one of their tubes.

The question I have is which contour to use? They are estimating my 24" Bergara to weigh 3.6lbs, and here are some weight estimates they've provided on their barrels with and w/o flutes on 24" and 22" tubes:

Taperless 750, 24", 7mm ~ 3.13 lbs, 2.7 lbs with flutes
Taperless 810, 24", 7mm ~ 3.67 lbs, 3.2 lbs with flutes
Light Palma 24", 7mm ~ 3.9 lbs, 3.2 lbs with flutes - roughest guess on fluting is this particular contour
Carbon Fiber 24", 7mm ~ 2.9 lbs

Taperless 750, 22", 7mm ~ 2.9 lbs, 2.5 lbs with flutes
Taperless 810, 22", 7mm ~ 3.4 lbs, 3.0 lbs with flutes
Light Palma 22", 7mm ~ 3.68 lbs, 3.1 lbs with flutes - roughest guess on fluting is this particular contour
Carbon Fiber 22", 7mm ~ 3.0 lbs

I'd like to shave some weight and will probably go 22 inches in length. No flutes is about $300 cheaper than CF and flutes are about $150 cheaper than CF.

So what do you think? Is the CF the way to go, or is perhaps one of the SS with or w/o flutes a more economical method to achieve some weigh savings?

Thanks for any thoughts and input!

I am a fan of the .75 taperless. You may want to look at shank lengths and tapers to make sure that you stock will handle them without a ton of work, unless you plan on getting a new stock with a custom barrel channel.

You don't find it too light for something magnum-like?

I have a Greyboe Trekker, so I think there should be plenty of space in there. . . I may do a barrel nut set up, so there would be some work for that.

I shoot everything suppressed, so I like short and light for my barrels as I am adding 10oz on the end and the recoil is reduced quite a bit.
