I searched threads and didn't see comments on loads and performance using Nosler 150 BT's in the 7 saum. Can anyone share their experience?
Yes that is a JRT. Gene is 6 and is a great grouse and squirrel buddy. Thanks for your correspondence.First things first, is that a JRT in your avatar? My JRT (Rocky) has been my hunt buddy for the past 11 years, he turns 12 Saturday.
Now on to the 150 NBT, what a fantastic bullet! I've used it for 3 decades mainly out of my 7 Mashburn Super. I use 7828 and lot of powder depending it starts off between 3200-3250.
Imagine it'd be a bit slower out of the SAUM, in the range of 3000-3050 give or take how hard one is comfy leaning on it.
IME, you can't find a finer bullet for all around game taking from elk on down. I judge all my bullets off how they behave and work on elk. Is there bullets with more BC, yes there is but for me and my chosen range limits (700 yds or less) it has plenty of BC. Are there bullets that are tougher and will hold together, yes there are. However in all the game I/we've taken with the bullet over the last 3 decades we haven't had one stay in game not once from any angle or after going thru bone. They hold very well in the wind as well!
They are incredibly accurate and out of my Mashburn (a skosh over 8 lbs scoped and ready to go) they will shoot 1/2 minute to 700 yds.
In my opinion and my experience (which is considerable, farthest on elk is 650 yds) you will be incredibly happy with them.
Side note, for giggles I ordered some of the 160 NBT's will give them a go in my Mash but can't for the life of me imagine them doing any better than the 150's.
You're barking up the right tree!
Appreciated.I quit using the Nosler BT in the early 90's due to their "grenade" like characteristics. A few years ago birddog68 told me they redesigned or used a different bonding process with them and he was 100% correct. I'm very satisfied with their performance. I hunt with a few different bullets and loads each year hunting and now the BT's are in the lineup each year. I run the 140's in one of my .280AI's and will load the 160's in my 7SAUM this year. I hunt primarily whitetails and hogs and I will defer recommendations on elk to the experienced. Seems more elk hunters that shoot Nosler bullets prefer the AB's. If I were to recommend a powder for your 7SAUM shooting 150's, one of the powders my 7SAUM likes is H4350. Good luck and keep us posted on your load development.
