6.5PRC, 6.8 Western, 7SAUM

I would beg to differ that there's is nothing obscure about thr SAUM or WSM...

Maybe not the 300 WSM but how many factory rifles are offered in the SAUM family, 270 WSM ir 7 WSM?

Obscure might have been overboard but generally they are enthusiast cartridges at best.

This is coming from a guy the owns a 300WSM, 6.5 SAUM & 300SAUM.

Brass isn't easy to come by for any of them; at least not the brass I want yo shoot.

If 6.8 had PRC after it instead of western this would be a different story. You could headstamp a 7saum case with "28prc" and guys would think it's the greatest thing ever. Point being, is neither of the cartridges mentioned besides the 6.8 western will be and have ever been obscure. They are proven and sustained for reasons well outside of obscurity and will continue to be a stable reamer used by many precision smiths. But that run of ADG 6.8 that's supposed to hit soon should tell. It wont best a 7saum and it will probly best the "beloved" 6.5prc but it will remain "obscure" because ding dongs think PRC makes you a long range guru.

Doesn't Lapua and Peterson make 300wsm brass...

I went 6.5 PRC due to ammo availability. Love the idea of the 6.8W, but feel it will suffer due to poor adoption, marketing and release timing. At a large place like Scheels there is maybe one 6.8W ammo brand on the shelf. There are cases of 6.5 and 7 PRC.

Obscure is relative. The WSMs were the PRC of 20 years ago. There are still more 300 WSM SKU than 6.5 PRC and 270 WSM than 7PRC. Few years down the road the ballistic illuminati will be wondering why Hornady didn't think to add the latest / greatest gimmick to PRC line. For ex, Federal is about to dump a new 7mm "that will change shooting forever". We will see. That is problem with 7mms and why none of the new ones ever get popular. It is the "nichey I need to be the paper greatest" crowd cartridge diameter of choice so flock to one new one after another before any become popular. Meanwhile, The Fudds keep the only truly popular i.e 7RM going strong along with the 270Win, 30-06, etc..

My son is 26 now and has been shooting the old superseded 7mm mag since he was 15. Killed his elk this year at 613 yds. 168 grain Accubond LR. One shot. 8 steps later, fell over dead. For 99% of hunting situations the old cartridges work like a champ!! I shoot a 270 or 308 in California because it's so easy to buy copper ammo. There's still more miles in those old rifles.

I built a 6.5 PRC with a Zermatt TL3 short action with a Proof CF barrel for elk hunting. I loaded 156 gr. Berger over 56 gr. H1000. I killed an elk at 320 yds DRT. Nevertheless, I was not satisfied with this load for elk. I screwed on a Proof CF 300wsm barrel and loaded 190gr berger over 62 gr. of H4350...2 elk 350 + yds. Bullet penetrated both shoulders. Both barrels with these loads shoot .3 moa. I just switch barrels ...300wsm for elk. 6.5 PRC for deer and antelope. 15 minutes and best of both worlds.

I went the same way. Have a Gunwerks Nexus switch barrel in 6.5 and 300 PRC. I think the 6.5's are a little small for elk too, though they will certainly do the job.

I think the 7 PRC is the best cartridge out for long rage hunting at the moment, that being said, I wanted to build a long range hunting rifle on a SA. So, after some research I settled on the 7 saum. I wanted it to be lightish but not stupid light but not stupid heavy. I ended up with an Impact 737, 7 saum proof prefit, Hawkins DBM and rings, and a NF 7-35 ATACR. The pic has it with a Harris but I run a Ckye-pod on it and a Scythe can. I ordered several different bullets to try and ADG brass. I had several powders to try and ordered some N560 but I really believed that RL26 would end up being the ticket and it was close. I now have abt 140 rounds on the barrel and I think load development is complete after today. i basically have a load with RL26 running a 175 Berger at 3003 fps and the one Im going to show I found today, with N560 and the 180 Eld. This is a 3 shot group at 100 and a 4 shot group at 550 with the N560 and the 180 ELD averaging 3005 fps. I will take that any day.

It's a 24" barrel. I wanted a 22" since Im running suppressed but I found a 24" and rolled with it.
