None of the above. 160gr Woodleigh PPSN at 3200fps M.V.
Tag soup unfortunately. On elk anyways. Shot a decent mulie buck with the 124 hammer hunter. Did its job.I just read this whole thread and perhaps I missed it but to the OP how'd your elk hunt go and what did you end up using?
The same can honestly be said about bullets designed to kill game. I've seen bullets designed to kill game fail to work properly. Sometimes **** just happens, and sometimes game animals just simply have a desire to live and make everything go downhill fast.If you kill animals or hunt long enough you will find out the hard way why you shouldn't use target bullets for your bullet of choice . Experience is the best teacher.Bottom line choose a bullet designed too kill animals , not targets.
Follow up. I tried the Hammer 131 but could never get them to group to my liking. I went with the 156 gr Berger's loaded over H1000, 2950 fps out of 6.5 PRC. 5 shots through one hole at 100yds.. I think bullet placement is key to killing game. Killed large cow at 320yds. DRT.I have had good results with the Berger 156 shoot 3/4 inch at 200 yds. But it looks like Hammer 124 are winning this pole. I have not loaded the Hammer bullets but it looks like the 131 would be a better choice if you are shooting a 6.5 PRC with 1:7.5 twist. I am always trying to improve my mouse trap so was think I would load a few and see how they shoot. Any one will to share load data with these two Hammers?
How are you getting a 160 PPSN at 3,200 fps out of a 6.5 PRC??None of the above. 160gr Woodleigh PPSN at 3200fps M.V.
You know, I was kind of wondering the same.....How are you getting a 160 PPSN at 3,200 fps out of a 6.5 PRC??
Fair question. He never specified what his barrel length is! 40 inch bbl ought to milk some extra fps out…attach a bayonet and then, with that long barrel being halfway to the target already, if you miss you can just stab the thing! How are you getting a 160 PPSN at 3,200 fps out of a 6.5 PRC??
3 were 3 for 3 with the 6.5 creedmore and the hammers on elk. All one shot kills. One at 400 and two at just over 600.After seeing what a hammer did…or didn't do…this year on an elk, no chance that would be my choice!
What's your point? I'd hope that any bullet, even a FMJ would kill an elk with a decently placed shot. I'd love to see the ballistics at over 600 on said shots, I bet it wasn't pretty. The fact of the matter is, there's no good reason to use a hammer or any other mono bullet unless you're forced by the government. If you want penetration, pick an accubond or partition, if you want something that creates a big wound channel, pick an eldm or berger hybrid.3 were 3 for 3 with the 6.5 creedmore and the hammers on elk.
