6.5-284 powder and case fill

Tagging in- been using H4831sc and R19 with 140 Amax at 2950- have H1000, Retumbo available-- definitely interested in R26, which is as hard to find here as H4350.

Tagging in on this thread. I have a 6.5x284 and I shoot H4350 with decent success but still have not found the exact perfect load. I have Retumbo so I guess my next step is to try some load development with it.

Yeah, I'm seeing H4831sc references all over the place, too. Problem is I have about 8# of the H4350 and was hoping to use it. My powder varieties are getting out of control- Varget, IMR4895, IMR4831, H1000, H4350, and a few others. I'd like to avoid adding another if I can.
H1000 might work well also

Personally I would just start with a velocity test. Load up in .5 grain increments and test velocity and for max. Find the velocity flat spots and test with 3-5 of each charge weight in .2 grain increments. Generally one of those will show a low extreme spread. I would then test for seating and accuracy while ensuring a low es. IMHO groups mean absolutely nothing without low es, stabile velocity. I use retumbo and RL 26 in my 6.5-284's. I look for es under 10 and usually can find something in the 5's.

ok little help here please,
I have tried all the powders you have mentioned above, with not very good results.
so I came across a suggestion of alliant RL 22..and it seems to be the magic potion for my rifle...any thoughts and input will be greatly received..

You have a very picky rifle. Mine has never shot any load over 1.5" at 100, most loads under .75"

ok maybe I am expecting to much, but it is a custom E R SHAW barrel custom build.
I can get 1" groups all day long out of any of the mentioned powders. but I found a load that will give me groups in the .290 to .600 all day long. that is what I would expect from a custom gun. but I could not achieve this with the other powders..
thanks guys

I had 6# of IMR7828SSC on hand when a buddy asked me to work up a load with the 140 VLDs. I was very happy with the results. 3000fps into the .3s. Case fill was good @ 52.0gr.

Over 10 years of shooting the 6.5x284 and numerous requests for hunting load advice, I will generally recommend a starting load of 55gr of Retumbo with Fed 210M/215M's. Usually a load in the 56-58gr range when using 140gr Bullets will deliver 2950-3030FPS and sub .5MOA accuracy. My experiences with this powder has been quite positive. I have found that several different lots of Retumbo(since the Extreme powder upgrade) have all been with 10FPS of each other. It has proven to be very temperature stable over several years of hunting in sub freezing, to hot summer target work. While a a slow burner, it will contain a complete burn in a 24" barrel, and while hard to verify, it is speculated that the more distributed burn can reduce throat erosion. It also appears to be quite shelf stable. I have gotten consistent results from cartridge loaded 3+ years prior to use. There are certainly lots of other powders that will work very well, but IMO, Retumbo it is a good try for the first time 6.5x284 shooter. IMO

These are three of my 6.5x284's used for hunting. A factory Savage LRH, Factory-Custom Cooper, and a full Custom with Rem700 action/Bartlien. All three rifle have 500-1000+ rounds fired with high consistency, zero throat wear, and deliver <.5MOA at 1000 Yards.

I have had wonderful results with 140 Elite Hunters and H-1000. From a match chamber and a 27 1/2" barrel I'm running them at 3041 FPS and consistently holding sub .5 MOA beyond 1200 yards. 210M primer and Lapua brass. A buddy of mine had his barrel chambered with same reamer and cut to 26". He is running the same EH bullet at 3021 FPS with a touch more H-1000 and WLR primer. Both rifles are Bartlein 5r barrels.

Tagging in...been playing the 6.5 Grendel lately...been ignoring my 6.5x284...

Some one mentioned not having too many different kinds bullets, powders or primers...I counted my 6.5mm bullets...currently have 17 different 6.5 bullets in stock!

And I still need to order some 6.5 Hammers!

Hello Greyfox,
I have a bunch of H1000 on hand which I use in my GAP & 7mag. I have a 6.5-284 being built by Cooper for my son and ( to keep life simple ) would like to use H1000 for that gun. Can you please recommend a charge range for me with the H1000.
Thanx!

DOUG, I would start in the 52gr range with H1000/Federal 210M primers, and work up. This assumes a 140VLD seated at least 3.1" COAL. While I haven't spent much time with this powder in my 6.5x284's, H1000 seems to run between H4831sc and Retumbo in burn rate, and may top out in the 2950FPS range in a 26" barrel. Keep an eye out for pressure signs as you work up your load!
