6.5-284 load development (changing powder)

My hunting pards built/bought 6.5x284's for our Wyoming trip last October. Both of them used a load with (IIRC) 54.2 grains R23 and the 130 Accubond in Nosler brass. Velocity was right around 3,075 fps in both rifles. Worked like a charm!

I have heard good things about that powder too. With the lighter pill do not be afraid of trying R23, H1000, H4831sc, or even R26.

Have you tried using Reloder 26? I would see how much powder you can dump in before you see pressure.

I have. Unfortunately didn't get the accuracy I was hoping for. Best grouping was just under 1moa.

I think I'm going to have my new Smith ream it out further so that I can get kore powder into

RL26 worked well in mine.....Cooper Backcountry (24" bbl) at 2974fps with 140 VLDs....no pressure signs but was happy with accuracy so I stopped at 56 grains.....these are both 3 shot groups.

I usually only measure cbto not oal......I'll measure the oal when I get back to my camp tomorrow.

My reamer has a .188" freebore, VLD's in the lands a bit measure 3.115" OAL.

Any further creates a hard bolt lift. I'm going to have my Smith ream it out more when I get some funds

Sounds like a Winchester chamber not a norma. 3.228 is what you should get with SAAMI. The Winchester spec was a short throat so people could run a short action.

Wow I actually didnt know that. Thanks for the info. I'll just take it to my new Smith and have him redo the ream job then.
