6.5 156 EOL

I ran my first ladders with 156 today in my Cooper Backcountry 6.5x284 which has a 24" barrel. Using Lapua brass, WLR primers. Since my rifle likes RL23 with the 140s (53.8gr 3088 today),
started at 52.0 2909, 52.5 2938, 52.7 2942, at 52.9 2971 with ejector and slight heavy bolt lift, at 53.5 3011 hit heavy pressure, stopped there.

Then ran a ladder with RL26, started at 52.0 2824, 52.5 2871, 53.0 2891, 53.5 2915,
53.8 2943 slight ejector, 54.1 2975 ejector, 54.4 2981 ejector, stopped at 54.7 3006 ejector mark but no heavy bolt lift.

Appears I should stay with the 140s, and save the 156's for another future rifle!
Eric, Any idea on what throat length is in your Cooper? Cartridge OAL with the 156 loads? Thank you

That's sexy as hell!

...And it will fit in a binderless AICS type mag!
Yup, I am jumping .065", but these bullets just don't seem to care. I tried .020", .050", and .065" off, and all of them shoot under half MOA. If I played with them, I may be able to get them to stay in the .2's, but they range from .2"-.4" at 100, and I can run them in my ARC AICS mags.

Once I rebarrel this rifle, I'm going to throat it longer than SAAMI (about .085" longer) and install a bainey 3.1" box in it, get a different stock and run this as a BDL and get a little more out of it. This stock will be donated to a 22-250 AI varmint build that is currently on the back burner

I posted the first half of this over on the 24HCF last week. Below I added today's results for you guys over here.

I loaded up:

6.5 CM, 156 EOL, RL26

Once fired FL sized Lapua brass (shoulder set back 0.001"), BR4, 156 EOL, .006 jump (2.96" COAL), 22" Proof CF barrel (round count 750ish), 74º F, 29.90"HG, 69.5%

44.0 gr RL26 2660fps
44.5 gr RL26 2696fps
45.0 gr RL26 2708fps
45.5 gr RL26 2746fps
46.0 gr RL26 2796fps
46.5 gr RL26 2829fps (slightly flattened primer)

The slightly flattened primer is the only sign of pressure. No ejector mark, no heavy bolt lift, nada.

>>>>Charges Low to High>>>>

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Today, I set out to ladder test the following charges of RL26: 45.3; 45.5; 45.7; 45.9 at 863 yrds. I shot them round-robin style, but only got two of each down range.

The "Red" 45.5 charges landed 1.5" apart with under 1/2" of vertical dispersion at 863 yrds. I need to shoot these again in larger sets. Velocities for the "Red" 45.5 gr. charges were 2764 and 2771.

Temp = 92°, Elev. 75', wind 0-2mph switching from 1:00 to 6:30.

Next to my 147 ELD-M load. I jump the 147 0.055"

The two 45.5gr charges. I use a q-tip with a little isopropyl alcohol to raise the color.

Thank you Eric. Sounding like it may be very close to the .188 that is currently being shipped my way.

Thanks for the info! Your results are just about identical to those achieved in my 26" barrel using R26 with the 156EOL. It's nice to see comparable results from other shooters! While I'm running at 3000FPS, your charge weight is within 10FPS of the results in my ladders. Interestingly, groups and ES were excellent(sub.5MOA/<20ES) with loads from 2950 through 3050FPS(hot!). Lots of latitude!
Optimum seating depth seems to be running in the .020"-.040" OL...barrel dependent. Early reports on terminal performance appear promising, and seem to indicate the 156 has expansion/terminal characteristics comparable to the well proven 140HVLD and JLK's. Given the performance, and ease of load development, this combo looks to be an excellent load for the 6.5x284, upping its capability significantly!
I may need to back off the charge a touch. I have blown two primers so far, but the rifle still shoots real good. I will back down a few tenths and see what that gives me.

I would figure about 5-6FPS per .1 gr of R26 in that charge range. I've observed that a hot chamber(on a hot day) can spike velocity 20+ FPS with R26.

I hear yha about blow primers

I'd did a few of them this month with my 6.5 A-square testing the 140's,,, 143's,,, and the 147's... I'll diffenatly will try the 157's this winter...

I have normally been running with H-1000 a bit of standard H4350 as well as testing out IMR 4350 and Varget...

The 4350 loads got 2750/ to 2780 on the 143gr bullets,,, the Varget charges where close to this,,, but not friendly to the primers and brass,,, I could use either of those powders if I absolutely had to... Pretty hard to bet the H 1000 so far... Its hit and miss for the RL powders up here in some parts in the North...

I really want to give the H4831 Super Short cut a try,,, hopefully it would fill the case above the 82 to 87% level,,, that would be awesome...

The search and destroy this winter after hunting season,,, the 2880 ish ft-per seconds for the 147 grain'ers will work for now...

Thanks alot for sharing the ideas all,,, I'm sure that some of this info will feed into my reload coming up...

Cheers from the North

4831sc isn't a bad choice for a 6.5/06. I would also consider something a bit slower. My 6.5/06 has been using Norma 217 with the 143 ELDX and 140 Berger Hybrid. I will be trying the 156 with 217 once my new barrel arrives...

@kingston good info. I'm gonna try AGAIN, with the 2lbs of RL26 I have?
I get way different results with my lot, than everyone else seems to get, in the 3 I'v tried it in (6.5x284N, 300RUM, 28 Nosler)meaning, the velocities are on the slow side or the stuff is volatile and can't get a stable load, on the same day, so it just gets unused?! I'm thinking the 2lbs I got last year, is just a bad batch?

Yes, I have same results with my several year old RL26. I always get way less velocity and I end up using another powder.

Today ran a ladder using Retumbo, started at 53.5gr 2818, 54.0 2866, 54.5 2899,
55.0 2881, 55.5 2892, 56.0 2911. I figured I would have hit pressure so didn't load up any further. Accuracy in the last 4 shots was a ragged hole. Will load up to 57.5 for next trip to the range.

Anxious to hear your results using 57.5gr Retumbo with the 156's.
