53gr vmax

A friend shot 120-130 coyotes this past season with a 22", 22-204 ruger, X caliber 223 Rechamber with the 53 Vmax at approx 3600-3650 fps, amazing results. He is an experienced caller/hunter and has access to a ton of bullets and calibers. He and I share a 22/204 Ruger reamer with .020 freebore, no turn neck. We both are getting amazing accuracy with speed out of our 12 twists with the 53s jumping .020 from the lands, IMR XBR 8208 with cci BR four primers, and Winchester brass.

I've used the .17 HMR V-Max out to 235 yards in my CZ457 Varmint With GREAT ACCURACY on P. Dogs. I'm gearing up for some Coyote shooting and have been told the 17 HMR will do the job. But I think I may go to the GAMEPOINT 17 HMR if I decide to go with the rifle. Otherwise the 223/556, or my 243. Any thought for those for the Yotes?

For me it's 223 minimum for coyotes. I prefer 22-250.

17HMR is not good coyote medicine. The 223 can be effective with proper loads out to 250-300yards. Longer range than that use the 243.

My best friend, Steve Chernicky invented the 17 HMR which was an off shoot of his development of the Federal Gold Match Ammo and his chambering of the Olympic 22 RF rifles around 1990. We shot untold thousands of ground squirrels and p.dogs with the 17 HMR. I was also a very avid coyote caller at that time, and Steve had chambered an HK semi-auto for the 17 HMR which had previously been a 22 Mag.

I called in two different coyotes on different days and shot them broadside at ranges of 10 yards and 45 yards with both of them running off and never being found. Steve had that ammo loaded with a 23g HP.

At that time, I was using a ruger 77 in 22 Mag with great authority with the Winchester 40g HP which has proven to be an excellent coyote killer. I still have that Ruger 77 in 22 mag.

I have heard that the GAME point will take coyotes, and I hope you try them on coyotes and find out. Shoot them in the lungs, they will die and another fawn killer will be dead!

Best of luck to you

Keith

It is the highest BC varmint bullet you can buy. Nosler claims a higher BC for their 53 varmageddon but I don't find that to be the case. I buy 53 gr Vmax by the 1000s. They won't hold up to more than about 315,000 rpm when the barrel is hot. I've made several come apart about 10 feet out the muzzle. You hear that whizzing sound of the jacket coming off. My load is 3980 fps from a 22-250.

I'm wanting to try some 53 grn vmax in a 22" 22-250 with a 1 in 10 twist barrel. Curious how they have been on fur for you guys?

Numerous rodents have suffered horrible consequences from 53 grain VMax bullets shot from my 9 twist .223 with IMR8208 or CFE223 or AA2460 or RSX-Terminator/AA2230. The 53VMax shoots easy half MOA at 100 & keeps up sort of well with the 73 ELDM at extended ranges. Minimum 12 twist,10 probably optimum. Not fur friendly. More work needed to get these to shoot well from my Sig AR - the tips get mashed upon round being stripped from magazine.

Just a heads up I swapped out my HBAR 1-9" barrel for a old Colt lightweight 1-7". I tested the 53 gr VMAX out to 550 yards in 8-9 mph winds. They shot fine and were predictable on steel.

This new 62gr ELD-VT is going to kick the 53gr Vmax off the highest BC varmint bullet throne.

RAPID FRAGMENTATION

The Hornady ELD-VT™ bullet isn't just about hitting the bullseye – it's about making a statement when it gets there. Upon impact, the polymer tip drives rearward through the large air gap and into the bullet core, causing rapid and dramatic fragmentation, even at low velocity.

G7 BC = 0.199
