By looking at the chrono as you fire an entire powder charge from low to high and reading between the lines so to speak, you can find the optimum load without having to do any "ladder test" or "OCW". When the chrono tells you that you've hit an internal ballistic sweet spot, then you re-test the exterior ballistics of the load at farther and farther distances to determine if the load is good. At least, that is how I do it.

I agree 100%. I've only done this once, but will be attempting it again as soon as I get my 6-250 and w/the US869 in my 270 AM when I get this new batch of bullets. Hope it works!!!

Re: 338 thunder pics

Tested some more loads today. I rechecked the 95.5 grains of H1000 at 100 and 1000 yards and then tried some RL22 just for kicks. It worked pretty well considering the snow squalls and winds that were picking up all day.

Here is the best load at 100 yards with 90.0 grains of RL22 and the 250 grain Lapua Scenar. This clocked at 3079 with an sd of 7: (3 shots, .234")

Here is 88.5 grains of RL22. Sd was not so good though at 21. Clocked at 3009 fps.

Here is a 5 shot group on the gong at 1k with 95.5 grains of H1000 and 250 grain scenar. This load had an sd of 7 and only had 4" of vertical dispersion in swirling 5-8 mph wind.

And here is the strangest group I have yet fired to date. This one looks normal but it is actually four shots with Nosler 225 accubonds and 4 different charges of RL22!! First charge was 91 grains and went 3189. Second was 92 grains of RL22 and went 3174. Third was 93 grains and went 3229. ANd the fourth was 94 grains and went 3246 into a nice .351" group! Obviously, this gun likes RL22 quite well with either bullet weight.

Are you a happy camper???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am! You obviously own some dial indicators and know how to use them. Nicely done!

Fifty, If he's not a happy camper G.G. is nuts. Super metal work as usual. (Accuracy as always) You're the man.---7mmrhb

Mike D. You have every right to be happy, you put together one heck of a Pipe for Grouper. Your Carbon wrap is a thing of beauty. I can't wait to see my 7mm ABS barrel!!!-7mmrhb

Thanks,
Rumor has it the issues with the rifling head for your 7mm barrel are nearly fixed. I'll call again today to see what the remaining lead time is for your blank. We could have gone with Krieger or Lawton (still can if you make that decision), however, I really am liking the performance of the 5R configuration blanks.

Re: 338 thunder pics

GG,

Looks like you are well on your way, congratulations.
I think Kirby knows what he is doing. When it come time to rebarrel my 338 RUM, I will be looking up Kirby.

GG, do you find RL22 and RL25 powders to be temp stable. I have used both in my 338 RUM, the accuracy is great. I don't have a chrony so I can't determin velocities.

Keep up the good work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: 338 thunder pics

GG,

Regarding your strangest group ever I have had the same experience with Reloader 22 in my 300 WM . At 300 three different powder amounts went in .5 "

I know some ridicule it as " floor sweepings " but thats ok with me cuz I would hate for it to become difficult to get /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

7mmRHB,
Glad to see you put down the acraglas and spinach long enough to make a post, hope all is well.

To put it into words: I absolutely could not be happier with the rifle. I can run a dial indicator over the web of this brass and there is no belly out. The chamber is perfect and the blueprinting is top notch. I have used lots of gunsmiths over the years and can honestly say that Kirby is the real deal. He's top notch, A+, two thumbs up, and 5 stars all the way. But that can be our little secret so that I can have more rifles built without waiting in line for everyone on LRH and their rifles! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Kidding, kidding. If you want a gun done right, send her to Kirby.

And to Carbon man: Thanks again. This wrap is unbelievable at how fast it dissipates heat. I can fire probably one shot every 25 seconds on a 50 degree day and never get to the critical heat point! Absolutely amazing! And it obviously is stiffer than a wedding you-know-what.
Plus, it looks so dang cool! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yes, it could be said I'm a happy camper. Now, how long to hunting season?
