At my wife's last count I think I have 10 Berettas from 390 to present. I don't know why she keeps bringing up the number of guns I have. I have a Citori cx with adjustable comb and Isis recoil system that has been rebuilt twice now. I simply can't find another O/U I shoot better than that one at clays or I would buy it. And I've shot all of them. It just fits.
308 enough for brown/polar bear?

1st: I think the 7.62x51 NATO or the slightly different civilian 308, is one of the worst choices for anything. But its better than nothing.
2nd: The Eskimos tend to use very small calibers for seals, caribou, muskox, bears, wolves etc. of any kind. They prefer .22 cal. (222, 22-250, 223 etc) My Guide told me that the 270 Winchester was his personal favorite for polar bear.
3rd: It is not an endorsement that troops used what they were issued. There choice was made by someone else. Nobody shoots a polar bear and thinks they are over-gunned.
4th: I used 375H&H for both and did not feel over powered. I would only use a 308 if I had nothing better.

have duck hunted in marshes with the nastiest of conditions and shells boxes soaked, shells rolling around in the bottom of a water logged canoe. Never had a problem. No duds, no misfires.
I wouldn't be concerned about "waterproofing"

I don't know about that. It works quite well in a general purchase light machine gun (M60). In that role, I can't think of a different round I would rather have.

Remington, Federal, and Winchester shells hold up quite well to moisture. Remingtons buckshot has a waxy substance on the crimps. I'm sure you could treat the business end of slug ammo with a little silicone or wax. You can buy a primer sealant (it's Red) and seal the primers on center fire and shotgun ammo by applying a small amount to the primer of a loaded round. A bottle lasts a long time.
I've had shells get left in the boat after several trips to the salt marsh. They would be seriously corroded. I'd test them in one of my old guns just to see if they would fire. With the 3 brands I named. They generally fire without a hitch.

In that role it absolutely shines. For many roles it'll work just fine but may not be the absolute best choice. But what is these days. For most roles I'd consider it far away from the worst choice. I have 2 308s. An AR 10 and a bolt gun. I like them!!!
Just curious. Are you talking 12 gauge slugs, buckshot, or both not working well? I would think the 50 Beowulf in a AR platform should work well too. 338 Federal is all but dead but you can still neck up brass and load for it. I'm just not sure how reliable an AR would be in extreme cold.
