.308 Based Cartridges Above 30 Caliber

I own and hunt with a Remington 600 chambered in 35 Remington, I have shot factory ammo in it but only hunted with handloads, like the 358's that I use I also load 200 Hornady sptz in the 35, very light short accurate rifle that is great in the woods or from a treestand, I love it.
Components for the 35 Rem have not been hard to find, although I have not bought empty brass in years.

Alaska doesn't have the old cartridges of the day, they are few and far between. When I travel I look for them. I just don't like to leave Alaska.

Good, thanks for the reply. If you cannot get the brass PM me and I will see what I can do. I don't recommend making it from scratch.308 brass because even once the .35 Remington dimensions are met, the .308 brass thickness is greater thus causing higher pressures. I went through what you are going through a couple of years ago when the brass was scarce. I've paid $100 for a box of old ammunition just for the brass.

You're talking bolt action or AR10? I'm talking AR10.

Yes, 308AR not bolt gun--- you can build even lighter but you better get out the big bucks for that-(dpms pattern receivers as they are more common) i used aluminum upper/lower, cf buttstock, handguard and grip, only thing ti is the bolt carrier ( tool craft) with a leupy ultralight 3-9 scope ( they don't make it anymore)

Wow. All of my AR10 builds trim out at ~9 lbs with scope.

.308 brass thickness is greater thus causing higher pressures.

I knew that going in, and pondered whether the SAAMI pressures could exceed the 34kpsi in a modern action, but not so much in an old Model 8.

So, my buddy tell me I am doing the .358 Winchester because he has a couple lifetimes supplies of new brass and the reamer he used to build his but we will see.

What is everyone's favorite bullet in their .358 Winchester or .338 Federal?

Back on track. I loaded the 200 gr Barnes TTSX for my dad with Benchmark powder. Shot in the same hole. Super accurate and killed things stone cold at 250 and in.

After much research I have come to the conclusion that at the distances I will be using this I'm going with the 358 Winchester. Have the reamer, brass and bullets available and don't think anything I shoot will know the difference. I can also plink with pistol bullets if I am ever in the mood. I think they are both great cartridges and either will work fine. I would like to thank everyone for their input. Now between this thread and my .300 Rum or .30-.378 thread I have my short range and long range boomers picked out.
