.308 Based Cartridges Above 30 Caliber

So, my buddy tell me I am doing the .358 Winchester because he has a couple lifetimes supplies of new brass and the reamer he used to build his but we will see.

What is everyone's favorite bullet in their .358 Winchester or .338 Federal?

Years ago Tikka offered a .338 Federal for a short while and I bought one for my wife to use. That has to be one of the most efficient calibers available. As one person has already stated it will give you 3000 fps with a 160 gr bullet which was ideal for her deer hunting. For northern hunts I loaded 200 gr Accubonds and they were good for moose and elk. It is not a heavy recoil and it's relatively easy to reload with lots of good data available. If you are hunting a variety of big game species, and you are not into recoil, it's as good a choice as you can get.

I loaded a 338fed with the 230eldX for a high BC bullet. If I remember right, That would get you close to 600yd max range at high altitudes for elk based on impact range.

Just used 308 brass in my 338fed die.

Could also run 180-200gr bullets and equal a 30-06
I was shocked how efficient the cartridge is!

With a 180gr Hammer, 210partiton or 225accubonds, what couldn't you hunt at short/medium ranges!?!

How about a 44-08? I shoot one in a custom Remington 700 and have taken a lot of wild hogs with it, as well as black bears and a couple of elk, plus more deer than with any other gun I've used in the past 20 years.

My favorite bullet is either a Hornady 300 gr. XTP or a Speer 270 gr. Gold Dot.

I also shoot 35 rem. Have a super hard time finding brass for it. Curious how hard it is to form brass, thanks in advance.

I don't know when or where you last looked for brass, but it is around if you look. There's also a run of Remington and Winchester loaded ammunition, again readily available. And yes 35 Remington bras can be made out of .308 Winchester brass but it is a lengthy and arduous task. Do an internet search and you will find either brass or loaded ammunition

Barnes 200gr. TTSX bullet. I already have a .358 WInchester, however would not have any hesitation on building a rifle in either cartridge. I do believe that the .338 Federal has a slight edge over the .358 in velocity, but for what the cartridge is it really doesn't make that much difference.

The only thing better than 338 Fed is 35 whelan IMHO but sadly its 30-06 based

I really wanted to build a 45 Raptor, but the parts cost and the three extra pounds it would weigh in an AR10 as compared to a 450 Bushmaster in an AR15 put the kabosh on that. I've very happy with my 450 Bushmsaster, based on the 284 Winchester cartridge, even though the ballistic performance is a little less than 45 Raptor. Haven't hunted with it yet, though.

Do your research for lightweight parts on a budget and you can do it too

358 Winchester, I have a few and love the way it knocks down deer, I would not hesitate to take moose or bear
with them, I handload 200 Hornady Sptz, only ever recovered one bullet but on moose or bear I would go with 225 Partition
or Barnes

I started down the path of converting 308 to 35 Rem, and abandoned it when a local gentleman sold me ten unopened boxes of Winchester Silver Tips. When I started, I thought it would be as easy as converting 7.62x51 brass to 300 Savage, but I was wrong.
If you contact Starline, I believe they make it once in a while and you can get your name in for a pre-order.

Fortunately I have a Forster Neck turner and modified a nylon bushing to slip over my 264 mandrel. I was going to use my Lee bullet sizer to size down the case base, but never got that far.

I built a 338-08 on a Rem 600 before Federal claimed it. I shot out that barrel and went with the same cartridge only the barrel is stamped 338 Federal this time. I am also currently having one built on a Rem700 (22" Pac-nor #4) which I plan to take to Africa. I have taken over 30 deer with it and a couple of elk. I have used the 200gr Hornady SP for everything before they discontinued that bullet. I now use the 185gr or 200gr Fusion for deer and 185gr TTSX for elk. It is amazingly efficient and puts deer down very quickly. It is by far my favorite cartridge. Starline and Federal make brass and Fusion ammo is readily available.
